Default Travel guitar

I fly a lot when not in a pandemic. I used to have a Baby Taylor that was perfect because it fit in the overhead bins even while cased. Several years ago I lent the guitar to a friend and we all know what happened next.

So I am now looking for a new travel guitar that will fit in overhead bins.

However, I have to rule out the Taylor because I want a cutaway body...

The Breedlove Pursuit Companion and TakaMini both look good, but I have not found a local store that carries either... Thoughts? Also, is there any other small guitars with a cutaway body in the $500 I should consider?

I have been following posts here for years and this is my first post...

Thank you all in advance!

Look at VoyageAir - you may be able to get a full size body and still fit it in the overheads. Others I can suggest are quite a bit more money than your budget.

Journey Travel Guitar - it's a great guitar in it's own right but designed for travel and comes with a great backpack that becomes your carry-on.

Voyage Air guitars are perfect for travel. But you cannot get a cutaway until you reach the all solid wood level I believe. I have a basic VAOM-02 entry level travel guitar because it's all I want in a travel guitar and it sounds good for an all laminate (top, back, and sides) guitar. It unfolds to a full size standard scale OM with 1 3/4" nut. I had a JJB-330 installed in mine and have played on mission trips. It's not gonna sound like an OM-18 but it's surprising good for what it is.

Another vote for the Martin 000jr. Haven’t played it but if it is even close to the Dread Jr., Martin will have another winner.

I bought a Gator travel case for my HD-28V. Of the four flight segments I've been on with it, I had to gate-check it once because the bins in the commuter plane were too small. In that case (no pun intended!) they delivered the guitar to me in the jetway.

Of course, I paid extra for early boarding ($15 on Delta) to make sure I could find overhead space.

+1 I have a Gator dread case, which I've used for several domestic and travel flights. It's fit in most overhead bins, and when it hasn't (usually smaller planes), they've tagged it with the baby strollers and delivered it back to me as I deplaned (or stored it in the luggage closet in the front of the plane).

I own a travel guitar (and Eastman ACTG1), but I don't take it on flights b/c it has a soft gig bag case, and the recommendation is to take guitars in a hard case. My kids have taken their ukuleles in soft cases and stored them under their seats.

I have travel guitars where the neck unbolts and slips inside the body - it's a hollow box, so why not? The largest is an harp guitar and the smallest is a parlor. Still need to do some traveling...

I love my Journey Instruments OF660. But it is way outside your stated budget.
The FF412c meets your specs and is nearer your budget.

Yamaha APXT2. Smaller than a baby taylor, comes with a travel bag, and cheap enough you probably wont care if it gets damaged/lost.

Sound-wise, it's a toss up between it and my baby taylor for me. I'm happy I bought my apxt2. It's a great camping & front porch guitar.

Unhappy

I bought a Furch Little Jane,,, sadly it is sitting at a friends house in Prague due to extortion level "covid" shipping costs (I ordered it in anticipation of being over there working this summer)

Check out the little Washburn, all mahogany with a "disappearing" cutaway... they sound surprisingly good, for their size and the money... cool little guitars!
