Default Amazing Slow Downer - Tool for Song Learning

I saw another "How do they do it?" thread and thought I'd mention in a separate thread that the Amazing Slow Downer is a useful tool for learning songs. It allows you to slow a song's tempo down to any tempo you choose, without changing the pitch. You can also change the pitch without changing the tempo.

ASD is good, but IMHO Transcribe! is better

... and I've bought both.

Some of us used to play LPs at 16 RPM to get licks. Better days for learners in the digital age, for sure!

A third, open source alternative is Best Practice http://www.xs4all.nl/~mp2004/bp/

Yes, I remember trying to transcribe LPs and 7" and having to get a train into London to buy sheet music or tabs - the t'internet is a wonderful thing.

For those who want to keep it REALLY simple and not have to fire up a computer to practice guitar, the Boss Micro BR does a really nice job of slowing down an MP3 to 25% of original speed without changing pitch. It is quite clear, where many of these slow-down devices and even software will lose or muddy the highs. You can plug in your guitar or use the onboard mic and hear both at the same time for accurate note matching. It is easy to set loop points because of the time counter. I also have Transcribe!, which is as good as another poster already mentioned. But I use the Micro BR all the time now because it is so handy and I really don't lose fidelity compared to Transcribe!. Also, you can use the 4 track recorder section to record yourself so you can hear what you need to work on when comparing to the original recording - all this in a palm-sized device. It also has a built-in chromatic tuner which is great for open tunings as well as standard tuning.

For me, learning stuff from recordings is central to what I do regularly on guitar. A good ear is central to music-making, since it is an aural art.

Tony

The free DAW software, Audacity, provides the same feature and it will also change the pitch without altering the tempo.

Thanks. I was hoping you'd say that it was Audacity.
