I own and play the 1891 Martin 1-21 played by Tony Rice to record the first track on his album with David Grisman "Tone Poems" (I'm told).

I once owned a guitar that was used by Christopher Cross of "Ride Like the Wind" fame. Or so I was told by the guy I bought it from. I believe it was a Taylor 414ce.

These Setzer guitars are going fast, people with money!

(some are really not that expensive...maybe those are the guitars stained with hair gel)

Default Guitars own by famous people

I own a 1956 Les Paul Special that Dee Snider of Twisted Sister played. I used to own 2 Takamine guitars that I bought from Jazz Guitarist John Tropea and my brother just bought a Danocaster this past year from the Walter Becker’s auction, Steely Dan’s guitarist. BTW, Dan Strain, owner of Danocaster guitars, makes some of the best relic vintage copy Fender electric guitars out there.

I used to own a nice Ovation C779-LX that Matt Sorum owned. This is the only video I've ever seen with him playing it. I sold it on Reverb back in May.

I bought my 39 Gibson J55 from Jay Geils in 2012. Still have it. Probably for the rest of my life.

I own a Franklin 12 Fret Dreadnaught that belonged to El McMeen. It came to be mine after I had stumbled across a Youtube video of El playing it and out of curiosity I wrote to him to ask his opinions about that model Franklin. El wrote back to say "That dreadnought is very special - shown at Healdsburg, once owned by me, and now in the hands of Nick himself in Portland, Oregon! It's sumptuous, but because I play with a capo in an alternative tuning, I found the 12 frets to be a bit constraining. My signature model OM is better for me, but I love and recommend that 12-fret Dred.
Maybe Nick would sell it to you! Plus, it's as light as a potato chip."
Well, Nick did sell it to me. And it is as light as a potato chip!
A link to El playing the Franklin Dread:

I once loaned my Martin D-35 to Utah Phillips, at an after show party, so he could play a few songs for the people there.
I was doing sound for his show and was invited to the party.

I have also played a Greven White Lady and a Yamaha L-53 that once belonged to John Denver and a Martin that once belonged to Johnny Cash.
None of them belonged to me though
They belonged to people that I know and allowed me to play them.

Not much of a story, I bought it off the classifieds here. It's beautiful sounds amazing, and the price was right!
It does sound amazing!

I have an old Ibanez AE-400 that I bought in 1984 in the DC area from a guy who said he was selling a bunch of gear for Bill Danoff. I still have it, although my sister had it on loan in New York City for about 25 years. I'm kind of stalled in the middle of a major renovation. It's a cool little guitar.

I keep reading, waiting for the "well known" part.

(in all fairness, I have heard of Woody Guthrie and John Lennon)
