Default String recommendations for early Romantic guitar?

Hi guys,

I just picked up a classical guitar that dates to somewhere around 1850s. From what I understand these guitars can’t normally withstand the tension of regular nylon strings and so I was just wondering if anybody had any suggestions for lower tension strings?

Also, as it does have a pin bridge I believe I’ll need strings that are ball-ended as well. I’ve been recommended to use Aquila 82c romantic guitar strings as well as D’addaro J43s. Anyways thanks for reading and looking forward to hearing what you guys had in mind!

Savarez white card 520B and the EJ43s would probably be the first two I'd try.

What is the string length?

I second the Ambra 800. I use them on a 1880, and a 1900 very light guitar. They sound great and no physical change of the guitar over 1-2 years now.

Tie a figure 8 knot on the ones without ballends or tie in some ballends from old used strings. I save ballends for that purpose.

Thanks for the recommendations everyone! As for the string length do you mean scale length? I’m new to the world of classical guitars and am a beginner in every sense.

What I’m looking for are strings that are ball-ended (as the guitar has a bridge with bridge pins) and low enough in tension to use safely on a mid 19th century guitar.

Thanks also for the link to the site. The La Bella strings recommended sound intriguing but it doesn’t mention on Amazon if they’re ball-ended or not.

If you guys had anymore recommendations please let me know!

As mentioned above, you can tie a figure-8 or bosun's knot and, if you like,
add a ball on the end of the string. Looking at ball-end strings only is too
limiting, in my opinion. The Early Romantic Guitar site linked above has
solid info, and yes, it was the scale length I was asking about.
