I can't think of a more deserving honoree. And if they continue to have poet laureates in Illinois -- that'd be great. A lot of fine writers and songwriters in that state.

Interesting. But not being a fan of poetry, this post sent me off to do a quick search of what Poet Laureate of Illinois is all about and I agree John was certainly deserving of this recognition.

I was also surprised I had actually heard of one other of Illinois' past Poet Laureates, Carl Sandburg. But Pandora couldn't come up with any Carl Sandburg songs tho so I'll stick with John Prine.

Anybody else detect a possible influence on Bob Dylan? (thinking "I Shall be Free #10" etc.)

Sandburg's American Songbag (1927) was a pioneering anthology of US folk songs.
