How many songs do you work on at once? (fingerstyle)

I'm down to only two new ones and one recent one and an older one I'm relearning yet again. And these I rotate over a week, working on the newest ones the most. It's all I have time for and that's about a couple of 2 hour sessions per day on the weekend and an hour and a half to two each night with a night off.

Two to four for me. I used to play through 6-10, but I focus more on quality now, Lol, instead of quantity.

If it's a new original, I'm fully involved in that tune for a period of time. Totally infused! Might play it 100 times working out little or big stuff......I'm humming it....thinking it through, sometimes dreaming at night or arranging and re-arranging stuff in my head to try and get to a certain place for recording. On weekends, I try to stretch to go over my range of songs to keep them in my head. Several guitars tuned to my tunings and then go from one to the other.

Once I've recorded, there's a bit of a "release" and then I can go back and pick up tunes I want to work on....maybe just a couple at any one time.

Fred, I'm the same as you, different guitars for different tunings. I need a couple more full scale guitars though, lol, so I don't have to waste time changing tunings.

Two to three max for me. Usually at least one is new and being learned and the other being polished so I can record it.. No more than two new ones as I like to focus and see progress.

In the last 5 years I have probably started learning 100 tunes that I have not "finished", meaning reached the point of being able to play as a polished solo guitar gem without looking at the sheet music.

Why?

In this phase of my life, working 6 days a week, 90 % of my guitar is just for pure enjoyment. So when I run across a youtube or sheet music of something that I like, sometimes I instantly want to play it. So I do, to whatever extent I can. And then in another few days another tune grabs my attention. A month later I cannot remember the details, so I have to drag out the sheet music again.

As a good friend of mine at a similar age said, I can remember every note of the pieces that I learned 40 years ago, even the ones that I haven't played for years, but I cannot remember all of the tune that I was working on last week.

All of them can be tweaked to be better and that's what I do.

One year ago, I changed my guitarist-ness.

I took on songs that I figured were out of my reach - it's been remarkably rewarding to master them.

When I do this, these are songs that are very challenging for me so I work on only one at a time. The first several times, I did this for a two month stretch.

In between I played and practiced my "regular" songs.

Oddly, I am working on a song now that appears simpler on paper but is a totally different style so I find it fun because it is so challenging for me
