Gibson ships the J-45 with Gibson Masterbuilt 80/20s not PBs. Assuming the store you bought from didn't change the strings, this is what you first experienced.... Although the Masterbuilt PBs get you closer to that original sound than Elixir's, if you really loved the way it first sounded you might consider giving those a try.
D'Addario EJ11's are a good substitute for the Masterbuilt 80/20s.

I've had the same dilemma. I tried John Pearse pb's and found them too dry, getting stuck on them. Then I tried Elixr's nanoweb ps's and have found them way too slippery. I bought a few sets of Gibson Masterbuilt pb's. I had those on before, did not realize they ship with 80/20's.
Ernie Ball Earthwood's pb's do get an honorable mention, the med/light set I thought was pretty good. Yup part of the fun experimenting with different sets. |
