[QUOTE=colins;6092677]Time to give some thought to the ornamentation on the guitar. I told Mike that I would like some burl and also that I would like dark blue on the guitar. With those rather vague guidelines from me, Mike got to thinking……

Hey Colin! I saw your burl today. Just beautiful. Yours is going to be a fine instrument indeed!

Smile Baranik

Love the blue infused burl Colin! I hope I get a chance to play that guitar.

Cheers!

Not for a while DT, but I took the pressure off Mike as my trip over to the US has been delayed. The burl and resin work is a leap into the unknown, so I half expect that he is quietly experimenting!

When are you expecting to fly out to the States? It's a thrilling trip indeed when there's a new guitar waiting on the other end!

Wish I knew! I have picked up the last two from Mike in person and it really adds to the fun of the build.

Outstanding!! I had a Lexus with a "Stargazer" black paint - imbedded sparkles that when viewed in bright sunlight lit up like a starry night seen in the middle of the desert! Wow!

Still planning on getting over to Mike's shop when your trip does materialize...

Smile Baranik and Hamblin

Colin will actually have two guitars waiting for him when his trip to the U.S. occurs. He also bought my stunning 2009 Hamblin GC in Italian/ziricote.

I am very much looking forward to Colin's visit. Colin is such a nice guy - plus I will get to play his new Baranik 00. He brought a new Wingert E the last time he visited, so he is certainly welcome at my house any time! Ray Kraut and I have also become friends since he moved to Tucson last year. Hopefully Colin and I will get to hang out with Ray at his shop during Colin's visit.

Phil, the inspiration for the blue we are using is that Mike and I both have cars we like with dark blue metallic paint – we both like the colour and the metallic “zing”!

Looking forward to coming over and hanging out with as many of you as I can. And picking up that sweet Hamblin that John is generously parting with. DT, why don’t you join us?

Now, a few more images…..

Neck and fretboard are coming on:

Rough work is done and some final sanding still to come (I hope ):

And the "fancy bits" are starting to come together too. Here is the end wedge:

Lots of thought going into the rosette and headstock at present. Mike has sent me enough good ideas for my brain to go into overload! I owe him an email.

Thanks for following folks,
Col

Default Rosette part 1

We've been working on the rosette design a bit over the past few weeks and Mike has made some good progress, so here are a few more images.

First, I’ll step back to 2008, when Mike was building me a CX model guitar, with African blackwood back and sides.

Here is how the rosette looked for that guitar:

The upper part is African blackwood and the lower part is claro walnut from the first guitar he made me in 2006.

Now fast forward to the current build.

We liked the idea of contrasts in the wood again, and for this build we decided on koa, as per its back and sides, and Mike’s cool, resin-flooded burl.

Mike suggested a new take on the 2008 rosette, which looked like this:

Over several emails we simplified it to this:

And that led to me getting out the compass and paper, to come up with this:

Ok layout settled. Mike went through a few choices for the actual pieces of wood to use and the two main segments have ended up like this:

More coming!
