Default Two Liljeström OMs: BRW home today, soundclip!

The young and talented Finnish luthier Anders Liljeström has just started to build two new OMs. Anders updates pictures of his builds in Instagram. Here're the first impressions:

This one and its twin (hog & sitka):

I'm going to follow this build with special interest since the first one will be mine when completed! I thought I was a hog guy but Anders's Juniper parlor with BRW, which I tried in his shop, sounded so brilliant that it made me a convert.

The mahogany twin is getting shape. Anders' specialty is a binding that also functions as a micro-bevel. This is a great combination of functionality and great (and unique) looks.

I hope to be able to update on the same phase with the BRW twin soon. The binding will have the same form but the colors will be more striking and "antiquarian."

. . . and here we go with the BRW: the body with bindings just finished:

When the build was started, I decided not to bother the luthier too much when the work is in progress. I think this is a good old principle: you find the right luthier whose work you like, and then trust the build to that luthier without trying to intervene at every imaginable point. But after seeing this picture, I felt I can't help going to visit the luthier and see the thing. Luckily, his shop is only one mile away from where I work.

These are looking awesome! I've heard of the builder before, through a guy on UMGF who's from Sweden. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the comment, Matthew! There hasn't been updates recently since the emergence of the OM twins has been delayed for a reason documented on Anders' instagram site (birth of the third child, congratulations!). Now he's back in business, and there're new developments, including

- the neck fitted in the BRW/Moon one:

- and the pyramid bridge placed on the hog one:

I'm getting hopeful that the time for the first test play is now near. Anders aims at taking the hog one to the Berlin Holy Grail guitar show--but I might get mine before that, and it wouldn't travel with him in that case.

Played his guitars and mandolin in Memphis.

His Birdseye maple and spruce 'shark' was one of the coolest looking, best sounding, and better playing guitars at the show. And he was a tremendous guy as well!

Wonder if he's getting his spruce from Josef Berkmann, who supplies a number of European luthiers with moon spruce from Austria.

The hog twin is now completed! I had the chance to test it yesterday. The sound is immediately great, no need to wait for it to open up. I haven't played a stronger OM before (and I have tried a few), and if I thought hog guitars don't have as much sustain and overtones as rosewood ones, I now stand corrected! My only question is now: can the BRW twin which Anders builds for me be considerably better any longer when this hog/sitka already ticks all the boxes I can imagine? (The answer shouldn't take too long any more: the BRW should be ready next Friday!)

Anders built this hog/sitka OM with some antiquarian touches (including the pyramid bridge, the tuners, and a little bit of relicing), but the sound is not antiquarian at all. The guitar should be on display in the Holy Grail guitar show in Berlin, and certainly worth testing!

So near, and not quite yet there. I went to see the BRW/moon twin today, but, alas, it still needs some little but important things before a test drive: tuners, saddle, and strings. That would be all, but now the Berlin guitar exhibition takes Anders from finishing this one.

Here's the most recent update where this one stands:

If you'll be in Berlin, make sure that you test the hog twin! You won't regret it.

The BRW/moon was finished and brought home today. I was doubtful whether it can be much better than the sitka/hog one. It is. It's too bad Anders wasn't able to finish it in time for the Berlin Holy Grail meeting since this one is even more powerful and deeper than the hog one. This new guitar will probably make my Martin D redundant, which I always thought I would keep for occasions where really big voice is needed.

Even being very much aware of my limited playing skills, I wanted to share with you a brief soundclip. This is basically a few chords in DADGAD, recorded on couch with iPad GarageBand + Apogee, no EQs.

And here're some added musings in Orkney tuning (with some low Cs); I should stress that the strings are a usual 12-53 set!
