Thanks Glenn. I was just listening back to it and remembering what a big difference it makes listening on headphones (which is how I record and mix this stuff) vs just on speakers out in the room. It sounds pretty bad on speakers, much less bad on headphones. I can stand (and almost enjoy) listening to myself on headphones. On speakers, sounds horrible to me.

Regardless, a fun song to play...

Late on this bandwagon. Solo version of one of my favorite Dead/JGB standards, Sugaree.

Even later on the bandwagon, checking out the Dead covers....

Just a super version, sir. Really nice.

I'm gonna post a song that I don't do that well, but a year or two ago I couldn't even begin to play or imagine singing it. And now I can sort of pull it off, not great but better than I ever expected to do. So, listen if you're up for it. It's a pretty obscure Weir-Barlow song, kind of long, with a lead guitar break to get a break from the vocals. It's one of those surprising songs where you think "that one's beyond me" and then you try it, and you suck a lot less than expected. And then you play it a few times and it starts to feel almost good. Which for a hacker like me is a real moral victory!

Default Let's hear your Grateful Dead covers

Ray, the leads are terrific. More importantly the vocals really carry the song. Whatever you are doing keep it up.

Thanks so much Joe. I remember trying to play this around the time this thread was getting started and not being able to make heads or tails of it. The chords are easy enough, but I had no feel for the rhythm or how to sing it. And I tried it recently, and it was just sort of there. I have real limits, but occasionally getting past them, or pushing them back a little is what keeps this stuff so much fun…

I appreciate the kind words…

Something I recorded when my guitar playing bud stopped by in the Spring. Looks like I missed this thread at the time, so hope it’s not a dup.

I think it is - I think I remember Sal doing a nice version earlier in this looooong thread. But no problem with dupes - I think there are at least a few in the thread! Your’s is great also - really nice playing and great country flavored vocal. Welcome and thanks for adding your take.

Hey Keith great version. Loved the vocals and the c&w vibe. Excellent.

Thanks! Yeah, I might have seen another post and paused a moment, at which point the thought of posting, like most other thoughts these days, vanished from my head

Thanks for listening and commenting!

This is one of the first songs I ever learned to sing while playing, way back in the mists of time, and one that I rarely perform because I usually screw up the words - it always turns out better at home!

As Bob mentioned it's Dead Covers Project 2023 time. Runs the month of Feb.

http://view.email.dead.net/?qs=68cf5...0e743cc1fec642

Create a new YT video in Feb, add #deadcoversproject2023 to your dead cover title or description, don't forget to post them here too and join in the fun. Like your favorites and that's the whole deal!

Thanks Bob. Here is Franklins Tower to keep the thread full!

While my older son was home from college we got to go to the monthly open mic at the neighborhood music school where my two boys took lessons. The house band rotates with a different group of the school's music teachers. This night two teachers that taught my boys were on piano and drums respectively.

They are mostly jazz musicians and are often times completely unfamiliar with the songs I bring and they sight-read my basic chord charts cold.

His last lead at 3:43 is, in my opinion, quite nice.

If you click through and like this video, "like" it on YouTube as we are nearing the top ten on the February dead covers project.

Hey Joe,

I really like this version of Franklin's Tower - really nice groove all the way through. And your son's solos are all tasty, not just that last one. Glad he's staying with it through the stresses of college!
