Default Good recording software?

Could anyone recommand a easy-to-use recording software? I'm not thinking about some expensive professional commercial tools. Juse something basic. The windows built-in recorder can only record up to 1 minute.
I tried GoldWave; however when I play back the volume is very small no matter how I turn up my speaker volume.
My sound card is built-in with my new mother board though. Could that be the problem?

I use Cool Edit Pro.. Works great, and pretty simple to use!

Well, I use Cubase VST 5.0 (slightly older version). Granted it's not simple to use, but it's hugely flexable.

Cool Edit and Cake Walk are probably the best of the bunch for the lower priced packages.

Cool Edit Pro has been obtained by Adobe and is now Adobe Audition . Check it out... fantastic software with an amazing low price considering all the features!

Both Cakewalk Homestudio and Guitartracks are pretty user friendly.

Cool Edit Pro is great but it's now called Adobe Audition. It's a good product. If you aren't in college, find a friend who is and get them to buy it for an educational discount. You can get it for $150 if you can get the educational price.

Is there anyway to link the ES or the Fishman directly to the software? How does that work?

For the simple answer... YES. If your soundcard has a "Line-In" input (usually a 1/8 mini stereo jack) get the appropriate jack converter (1/4 -> 1/8) from someplace like Radio Shack.

How about free?
Audacity
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

I've used their Mac version but there is a Linox and Windows versions also. Simple and to the point, but seems decent when I've used it. And for free, it's at least worth checking out.

I really like Digital Performer 4 and the Waves plugins. Of course, they are expensive and your have to buy a Mac to run them on, but hey, its your music we're talking about. You don't want to cut corners.

Actually, Goldwave should record as well as any software. It may be lacking in fancy features, but it should be fine for getting down a basic track. If the output volume is too low, then you should check the input level on your soundcard to make sure your getting a hot enough signal.
If the input level on your card is too low, then any software you use will have the same problem. Check the properties of your soundcard.

I read through the thread and I didnt see anyone mention what I have been using so here it is

http://site.magix.net/index.php?id=411

Magix Music Studio. I dont use the midi module at all but the "Audio Studio" module is great. pretty straight forward and you can record bunches and bunches of tracks. I have the 2004 version and just ordered the 2005 version

I plug my ES directly to line-in port on my soundcard; and I already maximized
the input level via control panel ("line-in is checked and pulled the bar to top).
Is that enough or still missing something?
