I am also intrigued by the side and especially the back construction. I would love to hear one played. Also interested in the lapacho/ipe body wood. Have read good things about the tap tone, but that it's difficult to work with, as in bending. Doesn't seem to be a problem here though. Looks great.

RGPGuitars - PM sent to direct you to Dion model no.3 cedar/lap soundclips.

Also pulled this pic from Dion’s insta (he’s episodically posting complementary pics of the #33 build there). Under the hood look at bracing - visually explains how his cedar kits take medium strings by design. Obsolesces the tradeoff between a “warm” and a “loud”.

Hello Paul,

Sorry for the long delay, as I’m not running this thread I hadn’t noticed your question.

Ebonizing in this case is the blackening of the wood through the introduction of Iron Acetate derived from rusted iron. The iron acetate reacts with the naturally occurring tannins in the wood and turns black. An extremely satisfying process.

The sides: these are constructed from three layers of wood, the centre piece being kerfed to make light and bendable. This technique yields very stiff, very stable sides with the glue surface ( normally the liners) built right in. I got this idea from my friend and old shop-mate Jeremy Clark of 52 instruments, who got it from his time apprenticing with Sergie De Jonge.

Lapacho is a wonderful tone wood, very hard and glass like. It’s hard on tools, bends ok, and is totally worth the hassle. This is the third guitar I’ve built with Lapacho. I have a good stack of this particular stuff. It was submerged during the construction of the Panama Canal, which is what has caused those wonderful mineral deposits.

The side and back construction really work to produce an articulate and voluminous instrument. I hope you get a chance to play one someday. In the meantime here’s a video of one being played.

the long meander of this build is stirring great spirits.

boxing day. a fan of dion’s photo work as well, i like the rare low light cast he captured here, lets the woods visually speak w/ humility and reverence.
