Too much reverb?!!
Today, I got an earful from some people because they heard too much ringing from my amplifier. My reverb settings were set at almost 80% so maybe it was a bit too high. But is that yhe right desxription if the reverb is too high? Too much ringing?

Rudals; You are addicted to reverb, my friendly friend.
Reverb is an effect - I don't believe reverb should be a way of life. An audience member might hear reverb as "ringing." Don't you agree? |

Cut the reverb to around 20%.

Reverb cranked to 80% of "full on?"
That's a special effect only type sound. It's called surf music, or on an acoustic, it's called "who cares if the chords are major or minor, ya can't tell anyway." |

It kinda depends on the type of reverb (hall, spring, plate, etc.) but 80% is quite a lot for any of them. I've never liked a spring reverb above 20-30%. A good, smooth hall reverb can go a lot higher, but not all the time. Less is more.
I'd say "ringing" is an acceptable description, especially from someone not familiar with guitars and effects. Bel isi, -kyle

OOPS!
Omgosh! I can't believe I was so blind! 80% was just ridiculous. I'll definitely cut it down to 20%. People just kept on saying that they heard a nagging ringing sign. Oh my...how foolish I feel. |

I say next rehearsal, crank it up to 80% again and play the opening to Dick Dale's "Miserlou."
Then just say "Just kiddin', y'all." |

You've already gotten some good advice concerning reverb and you will likely solve your problem by dialing back as already suggested.
However, it's possible that this "ringing" they're talking about isn't too much reverb, but feedback (which starts as a slight ringing when the situation is borderline). The good news is that backing off the reverb should also lessen the chances of feedback, so adjusting the reverb setting might fix it regardless. |

Yeah, +1 to everyone else. 80% reverb is for surf and ambient rock. I'd say no higher than 50%, and even that's pushing it.
