Default SRM450 vs. APS15?

Hey everybody,

I'm assembling a PA in the very near future and am looking for a pair of powered mains to go with my small mixer. My original thought was Mackie SRM450's, since they seem to be very popular and surprisingly affordable used. I could get a used 450 for about $300, not including shipping. I have also noticed that the Harbinger APS15, which gets pretty phenomenal reviews (for the price), sells for about $130-180 used. For the same price as one used SRM450, I could get a pair of the Harbingers. As a general PA (Acoustic coffeeshop shows, vocals for small shows with drums, Djing small events and house parties (nothing too bass intensive), would the APS15's be radically outperformed by the SRM450's?

Thanks,

Alex

Go with the Mackie SRM-450 speakers (I've owned a pair). Good sound, reliability, and better resale than the Harbingers.

Regards,

I think the Mackie does seem like a good bet. Does anyone have any other recommendations for around $300/speaker? I'm probably buying one at a time, as I have the money, so a single $600 opinion is not equal to 2 $300 speakers.

Not to the point of costing half as much as the SRM450s.

If you can get APS15s that cheap, and they sound good to you, why worry about the resale value?

I'm not too worried about the resale value. I just haven't heard the APS15's, but I have heard the Mackies and love them. I was just wondering if anyone had any experience with the APS15's vs. the Mackies soundwise, to see if the sound of the Mackies is twice as good. I think I may go for the Mackies just based on the reliability factor of the Harbingers. Two of the ones I looked into buying, I called the stores and they tested the speakers and informed me the woofers were blown. Not too impressive.

For me, reliability is a huge factor when it comes to my live sound equipment. My equipment is not bottom of the barrel, at least I don't think it is, but I bring backup gear with me anyway. I would hate to have a show seriously delayed or ended because of equipment failure, so I try to be prepared for most eventualities. I know, I'm obsessive...
