More fun with the ZOOM Q3

I'm getting more comfortable with my having purchased the ZOOM Q3 a few weeks ago. Though I'm having some problems getting the picture composition exactly what I want (too close in, too far out, etc.) the audio is sounding better and the picture's looking sharper. I've also experimented with having the guitar amplified or not and after this last go-round have decided that going unplugged is just fine and perhaps better.

I just posted two versions of Denver's "Poems Prayers and Promises" on Youtube, one with just what came out of the ZOOM and a second with audio extracted, processed with reverb in Reaper, and synched in Avidemux.

I'd appreciate comments on which you think is better - as far as the audio goes, that is. As for the performance, well, I usually seem to play aa tune either too fast of too slow and this one seemed to be in the first category. Still it was fun and only took two takes.

I usually like a "wet" take more than the dry, but I think in this case the reverb was just a bit too much. A little goes a long way, IMO. The Q3 seems to be a hot little unit. Two of my buddies have 'em (I only have an H2) and are pretty happy with 'em (except for the short battery life).

I agree that this was a bit much but I still like it a bit better than the totally raw ZOOM sound. That ZOOM Q3's mics produce a sound far better than the video camera I'd borrowed for my other attempts but i think I'll still work on tweaking the audio.

It does have its limitations and for awhile I thought I was going to return it. It has a digital zoom feature but it's essentially useless because you get a lower resolution than the low one it already offers. But since it appears to have a wide angle lens, you can get it close enough to get good sound while still getting a lot in the picture. Another downside to what I used before, a camera whose viewfinder could flip facing the subject, is that you have to do a buch of tests to see if you've got the location correct.

I also seems to eat battery power for lunch and I've switched to rechargables. As noted elsewhere there's a newer driver for it than the one you may get from the obx in the store and it can be downloaded from the web. It supposedly allows it to better handle low light settings.

Thanks much for the encouraging words. I dropped playing for many years and only started up again a few years ago. That's why I'm still stuck in the old stuff. there are so many great musicians on this forum I can't begin to approach most of the talent, especially when you add in the fact thatt many write their own material, something I've never been able to do. that's a real gift. I'm just glad they create things I love to play.

Somewhere in between, Paul. I like a bit of reverb better than raw as well too. In fact I cant record a home video of my vocals without some reverb in it. If I don't use it I cant stand what I'm hearing usually and never end up posting it. Nice job!
