Default Hanging your guitar/leather strap

Stupid question: I hang some of my guitars like this. Been doing this for a few years. I’ve not noticed any ill effects from it— but how about long-term? Not good for the tuning machines or neck? Or do you think it’s ok? IMG_9878.jpgIMG_9880.jpg

No, I don't think it's okay, I know it's okay.

Over the course of time it'll stretch the neck.

Same principle as guitars opening up when you play 'em.

What would the difference be between the way he hangs it and a regular wall hanger where people have hung their guitars for decades with no problem?

I interpreted Frank’s comment as a wry joke that also possibly indicates skepticism towards the idea that the tone of acoustic guitars breaks in with time and use.

Jkilgour, that method of hanging guitars is used by many music stores. It won’t hurt the guitars.

Hope this helps.

Here in the UK, we don't believe in hanging any more.
If your guitars have offended society, they should be incarcerated in solitary confinement (or a case) for a defined period, although conjugal visit may be allowed when you fancy a strum.

Seriously, I have three guitars on hangers in my office - not Hercules - just some no-name pieced screwed to the wall - been there for twenty years or more. No issues.

The most important aspect aspect is the RH and humidity around them.

One of my local stores uses that method. They don't use the fancy hook though. They just use a 10d common framing nail drove into the wall. Looks really nice.

Well, the fork type hangers hold the guitar’s weight on the peghead and not the tuner shafts. Having said that, I don’t think it hurts anything. I use a PVC channel screwed to the studs in the wall, with movable forked holders in the channel to hold the guitars. I use rubber door bumpers, the kind to keep a doorknob from damaging the wall, to keep the lower bout safe. They look like half a cricket ball and are peel and stick.

I don't see how that could possibly do any damage. You did change out those tiny screws holding the tuners in for 1" #8's, right?

The only suggestion I have is to make sure you treat the leather now and then to prevent it from drying out and separating. Leather, like guitars, can be very humidity sensitive, dry out in low humidity or mildew in high humidity. Looking at the pics, I'd say use saddle soap or neutral creme polish once or twice a year. Either can help prevent drying or high humidity damage.

Thanks guys - I guess my real concern was possible bending of the tuning shafts from the weight. But it looks like we’re good - thank you again for your insight, suggestions and humor!

For what it is worth, the GC near me does that in the nice acoustic room.

We are going to have to teach Frank to put a smiley on those kind of posts so I don't take them so seriously and then I get all red-faced and embarrassed because I didn't get the joke.

If the weight of an acoustic guitar was enough to bend the tuners, I doubt the tuners would have the strength to withstand the tension provided by the strings!

No, it's safe. I don't think it's the most elegant way to hang a guitar on a wall, but it won't hurt anything.
