I just put a new set of 12's on my 000-42 tonight after having the last set on there for 3 months. I was honestly not sure if they needed changing or I was just telling myself they have been on there a long time, I should change them.

They sound great as usual

This ^^^^^^.

Sound great on my AC240 and like crap on my Loar, I mean ready to sell the guitar it sounded so bad kinda bad. Slapped on DR Rares and all was well.

Retros don't play well with certain guitars. Like Dawg said, who knows why?

I'll say this, when they are a bad fit, they sound absolutely atrocious.

Maybe not....Monel is supposed to be very corrosion resistant, used in Marine applications like underwater tanks and piping..

pretty interesting list of uses here

Still not happy with them on the 00-18. Still surprised about that. So 8 days...they have come off. EJ 16's are on. Guitar is alive again.

They were just not as loud, muddy sounding, just not good. As I mentioned, reminded me of the Elixirs that came with the Rainsong.

Glad it was an inexpensive experiment.

I have custom light Retros on my 000-15m now and it’s a perfect match - more transparent than the D’Addario NBs - but on my previous 000-15m they were harsh and astringent - difficult to describe, but it seems they match to a particular instrument and not necessarily to all of the same model - go figure!

Wonderful right of the gate on the Rainsong...

I had been using Retro lights on my Rainsong CH-OM (tried them to tame some of the brightness), and then switched to the LJ's Choice (medium/light hybrid), which has fattened up both the bass and the top end nicely. This matches my playing style really well (rhythm/strumming) on this guitar.

Martin MSP4100 (light) recommended for my Martin OOO-18.
Unfortunately Martin does not produce them anymore.
D'Addario EJ-16 (light) would probably work fine for me.

I’ve had Retro custom lights (for fingerstyle practice and light strumming) slowly rotated among my guitars and I’ve come to prefer them to my former default string set, the D’Addario EJ11 80/20.

I’m very happy with the clarity, feel and longevity of them.

They sound super on the Yamaha too.

I've come to regard the Martin Retros as the acoustic guitar counterpart to the Thomastik Infeld Jazz Swing flatwounds that I use on several of my electrics.

Both have a nice woody thump and a clean, clear top-end.

I was initially unsure about them on my Martin 000-28EC, but after a while became infatuated with the beautiful woody tone they yeilded...

After putting a set of Martin Authentic Acoustic's (Silk wrapped) on last night, I'm certain i'll revert back to the retro's once they've had their run...
