Default Recommend me a book for learning theory ,scales etc for guitar.

I'm a low end intermediate player that would like to improve and try to understand how things work on a fret board. Thanks

I'm just a finger style guy that plays from tab, I rarely try to figure out the nuts and bolts of what's going on although I had piano and guitar lessons as a child with music classes in grade school, I just like to learn songs and play them (for about 50 years). That said, if I really wanted to dig in from the beginning I would look at the following:

1. The chromatic scale up and down each string to the 12th fret.
2. Movable scale forms up and down the neck, including pentatonics.
3. Movable barre and triad chords up and down the neck. (Learn to play a G chord in several places on the guitar for example)
4. What makes a chord a chord? Look at the actual why and how chords are what they are and how they are put together.
5. The different chord progressions, and the impact of minor and 7th chords and how to construct songs from them.
6. Flat picking vs finger style (including travis picking) vs strumming - how to use what you learn.

That's a lot of stuff. I don't know if you can find it all in one source, but you've come to the right place to start.

You could take Ryan Kimm’s fretboard awareness online course. I think there is an important technical consideration too, as things like running scales in different patterns, figuring out melodies and how to embellish them, etc., are what allows you to put the theory into practice. I’m more for putting time into your playing, then learning theory when it doesn’t take away from your playing time. Nobody says “wow, that guy really understands music”, they just know what sounds good, and typically the only way to sound better is to put in the hours playing.

Plus everything TBman mentioned of course.

Hi johbren

Fred Sokolow - Fretboard Roadmaps.

He put them out for about every stringed instrument with frets (guitar, bass, uke, etc). Amazon carries them.

Well done, affordable and assembled/written by a great player/teacher.
