Some of what I enjoy as much as seeing the instruments are the variety of jigs n’ fixtures each solo builder develops...

Default Head plate veneer & neck

Michael moved on the create the head plate veneer this week. Here is a sequence of photos that gives you some sense of how he creates an intricate design with hardwoods.

On the left is the starting design on paper. The right image shows the Gaboon Ebony pieces rough cut and numbered for assembly.

The Gaboon Ebony pieces, Holly purflings and Koa accent pieces are painstakingly assembled.

The rough assembled veneer and glued together.

The binding and purflings are installed.

The veneer is registered to headstock with pins and the pilot holes are drilled for the tuner posts.

Coming together...

Michael installed one of Mark Blanchard’s double action truss rods (http://www.blanchardguitars.com/guit...russ_rods.html) and glued the Gaboon Ebony fretboard to the Honduran Mahogany neck.

Shaping the neck and the transition to the back head plate veneer.

The neck is rough shaped (sans the heel).

I too love the headstock ... unique ... makes a statement while still being understated!

All credit goes to Michael who both conceived and executed the design...

Default Becoming a guitar

The project is getting to the stage where it is really beginning to look like a guitar. The beautiful plantilla of this body can be seen as well as the contrasting head plate veneer design.

The figure in the Koa can begin to be seen even though the guitar is not finished or final sanded.

A simple koa rosette surrounds the sound hole. Michael seals his interiors of his guitars with shellac to retard the water vapor transmission rate (somewhat academic with Koa being among the most stable of woods).

A bit of naphtha wiped onto the Koa back gives some foreshadowing of what’s to come when finish is applied.

You can now see how the end graft design integrates with the head plate veneer. We are discussing a FB marker as well (TBD).

Thanks very much. I feel much the same...

I believe Michael should be through the final surface prep for finishing this week and then a 5-6 week nitrocellulose lacquer finishing process should begin. We are expecting the Rodgers SS11 Single Gear Unit tuners towards the end of June I believe. So its looking like Assembly should occur sometime in July I expect.
