Default Suspenders

I've recently taken to wearing suspenders as a way of dealing with side effects from radiation therapy. The problem is that the metal adjuster on the right side comes into contact with guitar backs. I can deal with this by wearing a vest or sweatshirt, but I'm wondering whether suspender-wearers out there have come up with a more elegant solution. Other than wearing belts, of course.

Thank you in advance for suggestions.

Wear the suspenders under your shirt with a tee shirt.

Nothing wrong with wearing a shirt over the suspenders. As an over 40 year Union Carpenter, I wore overalls and carpenter pants with suspenders a lot. In weather where I'd be taking my sweatshirt off and on, I'd just put it over the suspenders. Problem solved.

Wearing a shirt over the suspenders will help, of course. Another option might be to make little cloth covers for the metal buckles. If you or someone you're close to can sew, you can sew velcro closures to a couple of small cloth squares that you'd then wrap around the metal parts.

That would give you an easy-on, easy-off solution: when you're going to play guitar, you cover the metal on the suspenders. When you're done, you take the covers off.

Another solution is to get suspenders that have no metal in them. You probably won't find any in your local stores, but they're just a Google search away.

I hope this helps, and hope you get through your medical treatment with a minimum of pain, nausea and discomfort.

How about sliding the suspender off your right should while playing, left side should keep your pants up. You could become a trend setter.

I must confess that I had to read this acouple of times as initially I was rather surprised.

Here in the UK "suspenders" are an item of lady's underwear designed to hold up stockings/nylons.

I had to google this to better understandwhat you were referring to.

Those things designed to hold up men's trousers are called "braces" here in the UK.

Anyway, even if you did wish to keep up your nylons, I wish you all the best for your recovery ... something that I know a fair amount about, and I need to buy smaller jeans every six months or so.

I've given away/scrapped/ sold most of my wardrobe.

Oh, yes, the "two nations divided by a common language" problem again.

There are any number of names for common items that differ between the US and the UK. I was in Lerwick in the Shetland Islands less than a month ago, and was in a clothing shop. I habitually wear woolen vests, usually Filsons, and thought I'd look and see what they had for sale in Lerwick.

But when I asked them for vests they started showing me undershirts....

When I realized the problem, I said: "Waistcoats! You call this garment that I'm wearing a waistcoat, right?"

Unfortunately, they didn't carry any woolen waistcoats, so I was SOL on that one. But it was a reminder to me of some of the terminology differences between us.

You have my sympathy and admiration, Andy. My sister has been going through her own battles with cancer, so I understand something of what you've been going through. Here's a link to the thread I started over in Open Mic, which links to an article she wrote that was published today in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:

To all of you who've been touched by this awful affliction, I don't have the words to give you any real comfort. But you do have my respect and hopes for good outcomes.

Most people just don't realize how darn comfortable suspenders are. Especially if you are moving around. I always bought my work pants at least a size too big and let them hang on my suspenders. Nothing binding around my waste and no pants falling down. All comfort and lots of airflow!

Ditto...…"Who is that one-shouldered suspender wearer"?

I wear "braces" when I wear a suit. In the U.S., braces are suspenders that have leather tabs with button holes on them. You sew buttons inside the waistband of the pants you are wearing, fore and aft, and button the braces to them. Voile'! Less metal to worry about.

Can’t help you much on this brother. A few years ago I walked out of my house into the backyard for a family gathering and I was sporting my brand new suspenders that I had just bought the previous day and my wife had never seen before. She gave me ‘the look,” you guys all know “the look,” and of course I marched back into the house and came out shortly thereafter with a traditional belt holding my pants up. My wife took the suspenders back to Walmart the next day for a refund. So much for my great suspenders adventure. 😩

Elvin Bishop comes to mind.

I’ve been meaning to give braces a go. I’ve never cared for belts.

Good luck, buffalohead, with your radiation.
