I read that article today. I bought my first tube amp recently. I just ordered an EL84 from amplified parts today(not because of the article).I already have spare preamp tubes. I have a feeling they will be fairly available but who knows at what prices? That article might do more harm than good

I saw that earlier today. I have a TopHat Club Royale and a '75 Fender Vibro Champ. I have a bunch of NOS 6V6 tubes for the Fender, a bunch of NOS 12AX7 tubes for both and a couple of sets of EL84's for the TopHat. I'm 68, don't play through the amps regularly, so I think I'm set. Kinda scary for the younger generation.

They seem to be available online. I would grab some ASAP, though.

They likely closed that factory because they were not profitable. Low volume manufacturing is going on all over China and there is plenty of real estate for some better idea to run in parallel.

My guess is modeling is getting good enough that younger musicians are buying fewer tube amps, and the ones that sell are lower power single channel amps with digital reverb, solid state power supplies, and no vibrato. My $100 Mustang Micro headphone amp sounds great, but has none of the mojo...which matters not to many younger guitarists.

The 68 Champ I can't seem to get Musician's Friend to ship me a new one (order #3 is yet another Guitar Center open box arriving and returning today), has only 3 tubes. My 1973 Twin Reverb had 10 tubes. My son has 4 guitars and no tube amps. Too bad MF offered such a good price and Fender increased the MAP $50 this week as I would just blow them off.

A clever marketing guy who owns one of the remaining factories can use this to gin up orders for extra tubes to collect dust with your extra toilet paper. But unlike the toilet paper, the tubes are likely to sit long enough to be forgotten and ultimately discarded at your estate sale :~).

Back in the mid 80's I started hoarding old stock tubes.I went to hamfests often and got really good deals on a lot of tubes, the radio guys were all about solid state and pretty much giving away those "obsolete" tubes.I got one quad of new in the box RCA blackplate 6L6GC's for 50 bucks,My sons and I have 17 amps between us, all but 2 were built by me and I have enough replacements to last us all a life time.

And then the last paragraph:

But for the short term, there’s no need to panic. After all, Matthews might be sounding the alarm about the scarcity of valve tubes, but his company has recently brought out the revived Sovtek MIG-50 50-watt all-tube head for less than $700. Valve amps are not going anywhere just yet.

Amplified Parts also appears to have a good supply on hand.

So, that could be distilled down to this:
Guy who owns a vacuum tube factory gives interview that basically implies, "better buy some tubes now because the world is going to run out." There are enough actual facts in the article to make it sound even more plausible - brilliant.
