Default Chinese bone nut blanks

Someone in another thread mentioned less costly bone nut blanks at five dollars each being a bargain compared to the usual(!) twenty dollars each he'd been paying.

I buy my cattle bone nut blanks from Chinese vendors in bulk for, last time, ten for fifteen bucks in 2020. Just looked, ten for ten bucks. Am I missing something?

No. I buy the bone nut and saddle blanks on e-bay, usually around a buck each when buying multiples. You do need to check photos and descriptions to make sure you're getting what you want. Many of the on line venders sell off-color or variegated bone blanks. I look for uniform white, especially if the vendor states that the picture is actually what you are getting.

The twenty-buck comment appeared in the thread about Philadelphia Luthier Tools &
Supply. The poster didn't pay that, he mentioned he saw it offered by another vendor. Still, a gold star for chutzpah.

You can get 3x bone saddle + 3x bone nut blanks on Amazon for $10 so yeah $20 seems high.

I haven't purchased these myself but there are good reviews.

Next thing you know, people will be trying to tell us that bone from (insert country here) sounds better.

Last ones I bought were about 5/$5 on aliexpress. Shipping was $0.98. Bone seems to be nice quality but shipping can take a long time. It's ok if you plan ahead.

I have heard that camel bone is denser and sounds different but it is dark.

Giraffe bone makes pretty good nuts. But, the saddles tend to stand a little tall.

I did buy a dozen to craft nuts and another
dozen to craft saddles some years ago :
I saved hundreds of dollars doing so.

There is a difference in quality in cow bone nuts and saddles, and better suppliers grade them accordingly. I buy them a hundred or so at a time and choose the AAA quality. It is harder and has fewer pores. My most recent saddle acquisition was this month and they were right about $2 per. I split the order between bleached and natural. Some people prefer the bleached as it is much more evenly white, but I personally love the visual character of the natural product.
