I own one and only one acoustic guitar, and it's a 00-18. Mine is a Custom Shop slothead 12-fretter (commissioned by L.A. Guitar Sales), so it's a little different from the one the OP has.
It can be strummed or it can be finger-picked, no problem. It has a rich, full-bodied midrange and delicate top-end, and more than enough low-end thump for most applications. It doesn't sound "small." Like many posters in this thread, I recommend Martin Retro .012's. They sound more clear, balanced, and 'pure' vs. PB, and they last a really long time. On my 00-18, they sounded a bit metallic for the first week or so, but once they settled in, became really sweet-sounding on that guitar.
