Just to add to the oddness, GC just cold called me (they have my # on file due to have a GC card). So clearly they're drumming up business. Offered to help me with any questions, or if I wanted to purchase anything...never had that happen before (or maybe I just never picked up the calls).

I just had that happened to me both from GC and Musician's Friend. I've been shopping from MF since 2011 and I don't even remember getting such a cold call before, although I have gotten personal emails.

The practice of calling customers has been a part of Sweetwater for several years.
With times being tough, I can see GC giving this a try.

I have been in my local CG 3 times in the past month and the store is almost empty of people each visit.
Inventory is also low.

That could be due to several things including financial problems and or the lack of shipping from China due to the Virus.

If you're interested in orchestral and/or band instruments, Woodwind & Brasswind (owned by GC) is having a Labor Day sale.

Speaking of GC. Went there to try out this Martin custom dread with "wild grain rosewood" and there were several issues.
  • First, they couldn't find a $4400 guitar the computer said they had.
  • Second, they finally found it, in the high-end room behind the glass...but we had all missed it because it was mis-marked as a $5800 guitar
  • The strings on it were rusty.
  • The action on it was high, so I couldn't get a sense of how well it played or sounded.
So, no sale of a $4300 guitar (or a $5800 mislabeled one). It was beautifully figured on the back...but it was also overbuilt to heck. I had just played a D-28 Modern Deluxe, and I swear to you that MD was a pound or more lighter than this custom D. And, being in a small shop, the MD action was set up perfectly, new(ish) strings, and was a joy to play.

Also, saw a D18 on my way out of the store, which is another hog backed D I was interested in trying. Check out this action. It's probably 1/4". Maybe more. Yikes.

Musicians Friend would give a 20% off for Labor Day. Not this time though.

Default GC's looking sparse...

Yesterday I dropped by a Guitar Center in Denver. The main acoustic room was only about 1/3 full. One third of that, about eight guitars were Fenders. It felt like Sears, three or four years ago...

Ouch. Savage. But it does paint a dire picture.
