zoom h2
I use a Zoom H2 for my recording. I use it to record lesson bits with my teacher as well as to record my own progress.
The quality of the recordings is very very good. Two downsides: the display is small, dark, and difficult to read, and there is no external speaker to listen to playback (earbuds allow this, but sometimes a pain.) I like it for what it is, but i'm not doing anything fancy with it either. I wanted decent recordings without spending a fortune, it accomplishes that. |

The other units you mentioned are somewhat different tools. The Alesis has omni mics rather than directional. And the small Alesis recorders don't have a great reputation for ruggedness. The Tascam is really aimed at folks plugging in an electric or acoustic-electric guitar for multi-tracking. Tascam has some new models that are more comparable to the H2, http://tascam.com/applications/recor...held_recorder/ And of course Zoom offers the H1, H4, and H4n in handheld form factors, and the R8, R16, and R24 in a compact mixer multi-tracker format. You might have more luck getting advice if you compile a list of features in order of importance and give an idea of your budget. Or you might ask for help in terms of the uses you plan to make of your recorder. Fran
