Haven't used it, but for $400+, you could buy an H4n and DualEyes to sync it up...that's the route I would go, but I know I'm just repeating myself here.

ferg, thanks for your patience and feedback! I'm all new to this so thanks again!

does the zoom have any AGC disabler function? or have you ever had a problem with that?

No problem Eric - happy to help.

The H4n doesn't have automatic gain control, so there's no need to turn it off. It does have built-in effect such as a limiter and, I believe, compression, but you can turn those off as well (and they are off by default).

Here's a video I recorded in my back yard...the "wide" shot is out of focus...couldn't see the viewfinder very well in the sunlight, and I was doing this myself...I've since bought a snap-on viewfinder.

Audio was recorded with a pair of Rode NT-3s...you can see one of them...the other one is higher pointed more toward my face...my lipsyncing in take 2 is kind of poor, but you get the idea...

Just to clarify, Eric...

With the separate audio approach nothing goes into the camera's microphone input and therefore the audio being recorded by the camera (AGC and all) is ultimately discarded. There's a totally separate recording of the audio being made while the camera is making, in effect, a totally separate video-only recording.

Then you produce the final video+audio form back home on your computer afterwards.
