I have a Martin D-35 Seth Avett (European spruce top, rosewood sides, three piece back with rosewood & koa), a custom shop Martin OM-13 CS (European spruce top, Madagascar rosewood back and sides) and a recent ("re-imagined") Martin 00-18, mahogany back and sides, Sitka spruce top. All have scalloped braces. Three distinctly different but sounds but all wonderful in their own ways. All have K&K pick-ups so I can cater the sound to the rooms I play and having the different body sizes lets me do gigs as a single, in a trio or with a full band and get the optimum sound. Love the combo!!

Either a 14 fret slope (J-45) or a 12 fret Dreadnought (Collings DS1). Those will likely be my next 2 guitars

Tough question. I think a Jumbo (J200) might be too big and a parlor might be too small. Depending on what is most comfortable for you to play. Having a dred and an OM is really all you need unless you want more of the same in different tonewoods. I have the perfect Dred (D-18) and a really nice Parlor that is too small when I have it in my lap but just perfect when I have a strap on and standing. I'd like to add an OM or 000 to my collection. Many variables to consider outside the basic question.

Taylor GA for a good "all-arounder", or something smaller like a GS Mini.

The OP and I both had a Dreadnought and a Concert. The missing next guitar should be a Parlor. They are very comfortable for carrying around, learning in front of YouTube, and noodling on the couch. i added a lowish-end Parlor and play it so much that I am thinking of upgrading to a high-end.

There seems to be a consensus. Basically anything.

0-18 for me if those were the other two guitars in my arsenal.

This.
If I had a Dread and an OM, my next purchase would be a 12-string.

No additional guitars. I'd spend the money on professional instruction. Best way to make them sound better: play them better.

Faced with a similar situation I bought one of these. A bit bigger than a dread.(scroll down to the bigger picture).

I need the OP as a next door neighbor! My J-45 and Guild M-20 would complement to what you already have very well, and vice versa!
I can in no way justify it, but a Martin 000-28 would fall perfectly in the middle of my two plus rosewood! If you enjoy fingerpicking at all, I voted for something small. My little Guild goes very well with a recliner!

For me it would be a toss up between a Gibson L 00 Studio or the Martin 00 db Jeff Tweedy.

I used to have a bunch of guitars with different sizes, built and wood combo for different applications.
After many trials, I always ended up picking up my dread all the time for all applications because I love the way it sounded no matter what I did to it and all the other guitars were left barely touched. So my guitars going forward (I have 3 custom build upcoming) are all dreads.

If I'm happy with the Dreadnought and OM, nothing would be my next choice. If either the Dreadnought or OM were less than satisfying, I'd replace them before increasing the size of the herd. I was at that point, and someone gifted me with a mini-Jumbo about 10 years back, and it's still a part of the herd too. |
