I think it's not bass-heaviness so much as a slight amount of distortion and compression in the bass. There's something about it that's reminiscent of a slightly overdriven electric guitar. All my acoustics growl from the Guild Jumbo to the Larrivee parlour and everything in between including my 12 strings and of course the National and Dobro.

I usually play with a flat pick and "choke up" on the pick and dig in to get the GROWL. Even my new Martin OM28 growls even though it's still a pup.

When I think growl, my first thought is the Gibson AJ.

Definitely a J45. I actually just sold the J45 about 10 minutes ago, but out of all the acoustics I currently have/had, including a J45, HD-28, AJ and 000-15M the J45 wins in the growl department and deep, smokey low E string for sure. I would never really consider the HD-28 to be very "growly".

Yeppers...a "good" sounding Gibson Advance Jumbo really has the growl in spades.

Also a Martin 12 fret HD-28VS slope shoulder will really growl for you.

The right Gibson J200 Western with the Rosewood back and sides will do it as well.

This thread is over three years old, so I hope the OP found his guitar already.

But it's obvious that we all have different definitions for what it takes for a guitar to growl. There's been some pretty wimpy guitars recommended as ''roaring''

All I can say is that the Martin DSS-17 doesn't just growl, it Roars!

Wood body resonator has a nice growl. I've a National MT-14 that growls and barks (but rarely bites)
