Should I REALLY bin my Taylor?
Hi. I've loved my Taylor 110. It wasn't labelled as a 110e but did have a Taylor blend pickup in it. I'm guessing this meant it was fitted later. I picked it up second hand about 8 years ago for £350 including the soft case about 4
Hi I am emailing tonight so sad and desperately hoping you might be able to help me. I live in Stirling Scotland. I play guitar - almost exclusively in our church worship band which I lead. I got my Taylor 110 (not an E on the label but it had a Taylor blend pick-up fitted) for £350 second hand about 10 years ago. It had been the perfect guitar for me. 3 weeks ago I opened my Taylor soft case at church only to find a really bad break in the neck. I have no idea whether it was dropped at church or at home but no-one has taken responsibility for dropping it. I spoke to various friends who know WAY more about guitars than me and ended up being advised to get a new neck from Taylor. I took the guitar to my nearest dealer (Guitar Guitar - in Glasgow) and they sent for a neck which eventually arrived on Friday. I was gutted that despite the shop supplying the serial number the wrong neck had been sent and even more gutted to be told that the model I have is now discontinued and I would not be able to get a replacement neck. I have now taken it to two different guitar shops and sent photos to a few others and no-one wants to glue the break. Basically I am about to be left without my Taylor. I am not in a position currently to replace it as even the bargain price I got it for would be a stretch for me right now. I had hoped that the guitar would be covered by my home contents insurance but I have checked and it is not. 3 questions: 1. Are there any other options that you can think of to source a new or used neck? 2. If my guitar is not repairable is there any suggestions you could make as to how I could pass the rest of my Taylor body on to someone who may be able to use the parts? 3. If I am to look at a new guitar is it worth considering guests without pickups and transferring the pick up our of my Taylor? |

The 110 stills shows up on the Taylor web site, and is not labeled as "legacy" or "discontinued": https://www.taylorguitars.com/guitars/acoustic/110e
Something seems wrong with the information you've been given so far. Have you tried calling the Taylor service center in Amsterdam? Calls are way more likely to get a response than one of 1500 random emails arriving that day. It is not unheard of for a straight 110 to be sent our with a 110e label, or vice versa. The neck from a 114 should be the same. Is this a post-2000 guitar with the NT neck? If it is an older guitar, it is understandable that they might not stock extra necks. It would take a truly awful break with lots of missing splinters to be un-repairable by a decent tech. Making the repair invisible is the tough part. Conventional wisdom is that a well-executed glue joint is stronger than the surrounding wood that is rejoined. 1) You might find a useable neck from a guitar with a trashed body. Search the classifieds here and see what you might find. USA member Fazool has taken in some basket cases and resurrected them, IIRC. 2) See #1. Search the classified ads. These things pop up once in a while. 3) My opinion only, but transferring the Taylor pickup is probably more trouble than it is worth. Maybe get a replacement guitar and put in a JJB or K&K pickup? |

Thanks for this. I phoned and emailed. Left a message for a phone back as there was no reply.
The shop I went to was s main Taylor dealer in Glasgow - guitarguitar - and the main repair man at that shop and also at Jimmy Egypt in Glasgow said it was not a repair that could be done. I'm nowb actively looking for a new guitar while still hoping for some response from Taylor. |

I'm trying my best to read this in a Scott accent but all i have to go on at the moment is the last few Outlander episodes....
IMHO that's an expensive repair for a 110. Doesn't look like the typical bread and butter headstock repairs you see all the time. That's a nasty break. Interestingly if anything this shows that the Taylor NT joint is a sound design |

I don’t know resale where you are but in NY you can buy a 100 series Taylor for $400.

Got through to Taylor this morning. Spoke to the man who supplied the wrong neck. He couldn't have been more helpful... but couldn't recommend anything. He said the way it's broken means the truss rod is no longer sing it's job and even if it was glued together it would not be able to be adjusted meaning the guitar could be unplayable. He also said that the 100 series didn't use the newer necks until during 2004 which we the reason for his mistake. Nice to hear someone admit a mistake but sad that it looks like the end of the line for my Taylor.

It is far easier for a manufacturer to make a replacement part than repair one.
Those that specialise in the field of repairs can repair anything, the issue at hand is not can it be repaired, but can it be repaired within a budget suitable to you in your locality. Steve

It may well be totally uneconomical, of course ... Quote:

OP, I feel for you... sorry to see the neck damaged in such a fashion.
I do think though that at this point, it is likely not economical to repair the neck, given the price you paid for the guitar. |

Just did a search on eBay in the UK for a suitable Taylor neck. Regrettably I didn’t find one, but I did find another 110E (not the OP’s as different serial number) with an almost identical headstock/neck break. Guy is asking £209 + postage for it!
