Cool K and K Pure Mini Installation w/ Pics

hello all,
I finally got around to installing my k and k pure mini and I thought you might like to see some pics I took.this went in my OM-15 that I bought from Ted here on the forum. pics with just an iphone through the endpin hole.
plugged into my fishman loudbox mini it just sounds better than I expected,
natural sounding, no feedback and if you have the time a worthwhile endeavor
instead of fighting the Christmas crowds

Nice shots. Thanks for sending me on the guilt trip !

I have had mine, still sitting in it's box, for a couple of weeks now....

I am a little wary of drilling out the end pin hole on my shiny Martin dread !

I may just take it to a good guy I know, for that part of the job.

Alternatively, I may put this one in my GS Mini (already got a big enough hole). Then buy another one, sometime soon, for the big M.

-Nice work! How does Pure Mini sound compared to a Fishman Active Acoustic Matrix? I installed one of those in my guitar years ago when I was gigging. It sounds pretty good, but lacks a volume or tone control. Of course I could have picked up their VTB control to add to it, but I didn't at the time. I also love the end pin shot!

Matt

How did you drill out the endpin hole without chipping the wood on the outside?

you just put some masking tape over the hole
and it makes a very neat hole

I've been thinking of the same pickup/amp combo for my own OM15, and with Christmas coming…..

How do you like the results? Does it change the tone...or is it same as unplugged, just louder? Do you use a preamp? How well does a strap hold on to the jack?

Very nice!

What size are the individual transducer discs on the pure mini? I can't seem to find this info on the K&K site and they haven't gotten back to my email....

I like it a lot it sounds like the tone of the om-15. I do have a k and k pure preamp that has bass, midrange and treble with a volume control that I am still fooling with. no strap I always play sitting down

Do yourself a big favor, pick up one of these to drill the endpin hole.

No chipping. I have used it on 5 guitars, no issues. A reg drill bit will ruin your guitar more often than not.

Here's a perfect drop-in fit endpin for your GS Mini, you'll just need to resolder the jack to the K&K pure mini. I've done this for both my mom's and wife's GS Mini's:
allparts.com: EP-4605-010 Chrome Acoustic End Pin Jack

The safest tool is the stewmac endpin reamer but at $70, its ridiculous to purchase for a one-time job.

I agree with ld27, the step/uni-bit is your best option and it cuts a perfect hole without lifting the finish. This is definitely DIY-able, try drilling a scrap piece first to get a feel for how the uni-bit moves. Here's a couple of points to help:
- Cover the area with masking or painters tape and mark off the drill target with a marker or pen
- Use an awl or sharp point to pierce through the finish first and make a good dimple (if you have pilot-point drill bits, this works well too, use a 3/32" bit)
- Drill a pilot hole the size of the first step of the uni-bit (usually 1/8") to get started
- Try to keep the drill as perpendicular as possible and widen the hole to 1/2"

Finish lifting usually happens when the drill bit is moved off square, but the uni-bit cuts so nicely that it helps to prevent it.

Hope this helps, I've been on your side of this question before.

...
Joe

Thanks!

Now I have to figure out what that is in metric

So hopefully it's safe to assume that the 2 x 1/2 inch discs on the Twin Spot are going to have an output roughly similar to the 3 x 7/16 inch discs on the Pure Mini?????
