Songs for Nashville tuning
Just ordered a couple of sets of Curt Mangan “High Strung Nashville Tuning” 12-32 after watching a short video of someone playing a few chords and a short lead. Thought it might thing fun to introduce at a jam, and could just be fun to explore on my own.
Does anyone have some songs that they think would really shine when played in Nashville tuning? |

It's can be quite a hauntingly beautiful sound.
All those thin strings need to be 100% in tune and can be easily accidentally bent out of tune with your fret hand, takes a little extra care to fret accurately and cleanly but it's not difficult to adjust. Haven't tried Curt Mangans, I really like the GHS 11-20 set pictured.

I play pretty much everything on the guitar I strung with Curt Mangan Nashville tuning strings. It is a lot of fun to play.
Norwegian Wood, Mr. Bojangles, Wonderful World, Back In the High Life Again, and Sounds of Silence all sound cool. Have fun! |

Rich, you need to report back. I would love to see if you enjoy them as much as I have.

Carved out some time to put the Mangans on my Collings OM2HG last night, and have started noodling around with them this morning. They yield a very interesting sound. "Haunting" is a good description. IMO, like a 12 string, there are some songs that really sound great using them, but there are a lot of songs that don't sound quite right. My first take is that songs that have some minor chords or that are in a minor key are going to be the better choices.
I discovered that Gillian Welch's "Annabelle" has a lot of potential. And "Wild Horses" is perfect. The 12-32 gauge of the Mangans really reduce any tendency to push the strings sharp when fretting. And I think they sound great. Looking forward to finding more songs that really shine with Nashville tuning. |
