Default NGD Somogyi OM

I have strong memories of the times in my life when I have been in close proximity to greatness. For example the time I sat in the front row at a Julian Bream concert and marveled at the tone he could create. The same with a small venue Itzhak Perlman performance. A chance conversation with a Nobel Prize winner in Physics as we talked (at a VERY basic level) about his research. And now, having the unbelievable luck to own an Ervin Somogyi masterpiece.

Of all the guitars I have owned, many by superb luthiers, his stands out in stark relief. Not in the big things, like over the top volume or resonance, but in the nuance and tidiness of his house sound. The trebles can take the paint of the walls but it is when you play them pianissimo that their clarity and sparkle really show up. Block chords are well balanced and neat as a button down shirt. The neck is fast and obviously the result of an evolutionary process where only the fittest profile and setup survived.

The spruce / brazilian instrument was built in 2017 for a show and was never purchased. It sat unloved with Mike Joyce at Luthier's Collection. I was in the midst of a Casimi build when I received an offer for that guitar that was generous and without conditions. Before I answered I took a look to see what I could replace it with. That's when I stumbled onto the Somogyi. A few administrative actions and before I knew it the Somogyi was at the front door.

I'm smitten with the sound "as is" yet I know that it's been silent for years and needs to be broken in. I can't imaging how good it will be when it opens up. Mr. Somogyi is the Godfather of finger style acoustic guitars. He not only made the world a richer place by making distinctive instruments and defining why they are that way, he also taught a new generation of luthiers how to make them and thereby forever defining his legacy. I'm just not worthy. There are lots of you tube videos of Somogyi OM's out there. None do them justice.

Congratulations on an exquisite instrument.

I've played only one of his instruments so far, and obviously was highly impressed. I'm in the middle of reading his book, The Responsive Guitar and soon will read the Making of The Responsive Guitar. He is almost as good of a writer and philosopher as he is a builder.

Stunning. An hour to play one of his instruments would be amazing.

Ah congrats!! Magnificent instrument. I know this one from the Luthier’s Collection site. Figured it was long sold.

You have fine taste in guitars, I know. I hope this one brings you a lifetime of comfort and joy.

Or at least a couple months of luxury

Wow, wow, wow.

I can only imagine the smiles (and possibly some watery-eyes) you've experienced since spending time with that guitar. Enjoy in good health. Looks like the perfect guitar to spend an hour or two with, everyday.

I actually played your guitar when it was just finished at the Somogyi shop. I loved it.

Wow. Small world. Can you add anything to the history of the instrument over the past four years?

Congratulations on a great find!!

When it happens like that, happenstance is truly happening!

May you get many long years of enjoyment from what is a beautiful example of Ervinís work.

Congratulations on receiving such an incredible instrument! I remember seeing it while it was still on the bench. This was my first time seeing Ervin's segmented rosette with just the outline, what a unique piece. Hope this guitar will bring you many years of joy!

The somogyi mod d that i once owned remains one of the greatest guitars that I have ever played. Ending up with a somogyi is not such a bad thing at all!
