I do know my new SJ-200 is the lushest, warmest, deepest sounding guitar I've ever played ... Maple back & sides with 80/20 lights and a .60mm nylon pick.

Perfect nut width at 1.72", right in between 1.69" and 1.75".

Expensive in the USA ... even more so outside the USA!!
I've never played a SJ200. I would love to try one sometime.

Not a Gibson owner either...just answering the OP. I would take a J185 or custom J35/45 over just about any Taylor, though, for mojo alone.

Because??? It's a matter of degree the OP was ostensibly making, and underscored by mentioning it was nearly 1/2 cost.

I love Gibson for its place in history and bold designs. The OP just made a further connection that I responded to.

I've only owned one acoustic Gibson (although I've owned some Les Pauls), a CL dread, but have played many Gibbies. I've played great ones, but I've also played lemons, and particularly played very flawed ones. In fact, many Gibson electric players I've known through the years do not like their acoustics that much. And that's a fact.

For some reason, here in Puerto Rico, Martin and Gibson have had many problems selling high-end guitars, particularly Gibson, although LPs, SGs and their semi hollows are very popular.

I’ve never owned a Gibson, but I’d love to have a J-45. I love the way they look and sound.

Still my point stands, because based on your reply, the origin of the guitar is an important factor in terms of quality.

Probably shouldn't answer this because it does seem repetitive, BUT....everyone hears differently, and your ears can get used to a certain sound. I love my old Gibson J-30. Had it since it was brand new. It is FAR from thin sounding. It has also held up perfectly. Once had a Taylor 12 string limited. Started out as a nice guitar, but the neck became an unrepairable banana. I have had a Gibson J-15 - sold it because it sounded EXACTLY like my J-30. It was an awesome guitar. Had a L-00...it was awesome too. Got a wild hair that I won't elaborate on and traded it. Wish I hadn't and hope to eventually get another.

I think the OPs ears have just gotten used to Taylors. But Gibson guitars are far from thin sounding.

We are all different. Personally, I think Taylors are over-rated, I think they change their models too much and are surrounded by a lot of marketing hype, but I normally keep all of that to myself. Whoops...did I type that out? But, I also understand being a fan. And there is nothing wrong with being a fan. I am a fan of Gibson and Baxendale guitars.

My 57 Country Western sounds and plays WAY different
from my d-28 authentic. If you were to objectively evaluate
the fit and finish of both, stick a camera down in there and
look around, you'd have to say the Martin wins hands down.

I might play my Country Western more... I really like it

They seem to have more variability than others, which just means you should play before you pay. Most Gibsons are as good as anything out there, IMO. Im a Martin guy, but my J-185 is possibly my “if you could only keep one” guitar.

'I have played a bunch of Gibsons, and most of them don't sound good to me. Very thin sounding, dull, etc... I don't know - I feel like they are overrated.'

Well you did call them thin sounding, dull and overrated in your opening 2 sentences but I was OK with that, you are certainly entitled to your own opinion.

I think providing an opinion of a brand of guitars (where I actually even own one) is not the same as bashing. I just stated my opinion. But I'm glad you're okay with that.

The best of them (mostly archtops IME) are second to none - the main problem I've found is lack of consistency over the years, compared to their competition...
