Martin J-40 vis-à-vis D-41
I was considering a D-41 then realized it was pretty much the same as my HD-28 except for aesthetics so looked at a J-40 and really like the sound but it doesn't seem to get much press.
Any empirical info on the J-40 (re imagined version) would be great. SL

The J-14 fret body was conceived by Chris Martin IV himself in 1984 when he increased the body depth of the existing 0000/M guitar from 4 1/8" to match dreadnought depth of 4 7/8" - a 3/4" difference.
I read an interesting claim that the J-14 fret body has 1097 cubic inches volume compared to the Martin Dreadnought's 1025 cubic inches - deceptive!

The one guitar that I wish I could get back now would be a J-40 I sold thinking I would be happier with an OM size and timbre. I was wrong. But I've since made up for it.

I've got no ''empirical info'' for you. All I can tell you is that I love my Martin J body guitars;
The J-40 is the best kept secret in the Martin line. And my J-17 is the coolest guitar I own. It was made for me by the Custom shop right before they stopped making customs of the lower level guitars. I love playing them and the one I'm playing will be my favorite until I play the other one. If I ever have to choose one, I think it will be the J-17 because it the only one ever made |
