I am now looking at John Datlen, though not so traditional design, but his background as high end furniture woodworker surely will translate on to his instruments, getting my tone will be another more focusing half of his effort.

I read about others that order a custom-built guitar and do not get the tone they were expecting but that has certainly not been the situation for me in my six custom builds. In every case I played multiple guitars by the luthier I was considering before ordering mine, to look for a sound I liked and a consistency in her/his guitars. In every case the builder delivered an instrument that met my tonal expectations.
Maybe I was lucky in choosing four builders that have a signature sound and consistent product. It is worth discussing with the builders you are considering.
