Pressure sensitive thumb bump
Been noticing pain inside the left thumb at the base, mainly when moving the keyser type capo. Feels like a bone bruise but there's a tiny bump at the joint. Doesn't hurt while playing, but sore turning a doorknob and when it presses against hard surfaces. Been playing over 50 years, might not be related but not sure. Anyone have similar experiences or ideas?

I wonder if you might have a Mylon Cyst. There painful but not otherwise harmful.

I wondered about that or possibly a ganglion cyst. It came on gradually over a few weeks. "Getting old is not for sissies" like they say I guess.

O.k., thanks, I'll try that- could you shed some light on how that might help?

I had great luck with black cherry juice (not sugary juice "product" or cherry "drink") usually found in the health food aisle in the grocery store. Back when I was actively practicing karate, I would get home 20 minutes after a class, and always had to pre-stage six aspirin and water near the door. Pain brought me nearly to tears just getting up three steps into the house. But a shot glass of black cherry juice had me running up and down the stairs pain-free 15 minutes alter, without the aspirin.
My understanding is that something in cherry juice washes the urea out of the sinovial fluid that lubes the joints. Excess urea is basically gout. Since having knee replacements on both sides, my knees are not nearly so sensitive. FWIW. |

You are welcome, Drew. Cherry juice seemed like black magic until I tried it (got the info originally from the "Eat Right for Your Blood Type" book). Note that this is mostly applicable to arthritis issues and symptoms, and would not affect a cyst. But it cannot hurt.....

My right thumb gives me a jolt opening doorknobs now and again. I'm sure it's from flat picking for 50 years. This time of year is hell for this as I have 40 roses and six vines to prune back. Thank God for the power shears. But yeah, it's getting old and it sucks.

I can relate to your pain. I'm 73 and the lower joint of my fretting thumb is sore and I think it's from over-use from doing barre chords, so I'm trying to find alternate chord shapes when possible.sometimes I have to click it back into position. "The older you get - the better you were".

I had that problem in 2012, along with Dupuytrens. The thumb problem was a tendon passing over the joint being compressed against the back of the neck. I think my 12-string caused it. It was corrected during the Dupuytrens operation and did not come back after I sold the 12-string.

does your thumb click or catch? I'm going through a bad bout of trigger thumb and it hurts to pressure about where you describe. I think that is where the tendon goes through the tendon guide.

They both do intermittently, I did carpentry for 30 years. The bump might be related but it’s new. Going to get that tart cherry juice today. Played 1 1/2 hrs yesterday and it doesn’t seem to really touch the neck, hmmm, and the pain is subsiding. I need to study hand anatomy obviously.
