Chris Smither
How 'bout a little folk/blues to start your Monday morning? A member reminded me yesterday of Smither's talents, so I spent the day enjoying some of his music. I was introduced to Smither many years ago by a friend of mine at Collings Guitars; Smither plays a lovely 0002H SS Cutaway. Heavily influenced by Lightnin' Hopkins, he does a terrific job of alternating bass or Travis picking fingerstyle.
Here's "Link of Chain..." "Love You Like a Man..." "Statesboro Blues..." "The Devil's Real..." |

Thanks for this - it's been a while since I've spent time with his music. Saw him a couple of times in, I think, the 80's, maybe 90's. Such a great writer and player...

Many, many years ago I got an 8-track cartridge of his "Don't Drag it On" album in one of those cut-out bins. He's done other great stuff, but that is still one fine album, much deserving of being better known.
Now-a-days I assume many of us would then look to take my advice and listen to it on a streaming service. I just looked on Spotify myself, and it's not available as such.

An 8-track? Did you copy it later onto something else?

Decent catalog of his material on iTunes.

Originally put out in 1972. It was finally re-released on CD early this century. I think I may have continued listening with a cassette dupe of the 8track for the later part of the 20th century.
But at least on Spotify, it appears to be missing in action again. It is on YouTube I can't say how much if any money come to Smither from that (and of course we all know that the streaming revenues might be close to nothing anyway) He's been consistently good for years, so anyone made curious by this thread can pretty much start anywhere, but I have such love for this record I had to point it out. Great acoustic guitar playing, emotive vocals, great songwriting and covers.
