Well, I hope he gets to it and it comes in soon for you. I know you can't wait!

Meanwhile Per has made progress on the 45 pearl. Note how nicely the fretboard extension 90 degree angle meets the correct rosette ring.

Thanks Per!

Default 45 Heel carve.

Getting closer to the finish room. Per is doing the final neck carve for 45 prior to the headstock inlay. Love the carve...

Thanks Per!

This may be an idiot style of question, but I've been meaning to ask it for quite a while.
Can anyone tell me if there is a particular reason why most guitars have the heel of the neck not flush with the back of the guitar?

Zandit75,

My best guess is that Martin must have made the design choice a long time ago for servicing the guitar in the future. I notice that the heel stops where the sides do, above the bottom trim. In the event of a neck set down the road, maybe it is that way because the bottom trim is spared any damage, or if you have to take the back off for some reason.

My Gibson heel however is almost flush to the bottom.

Thanks Matthew!

Default 45S Headstock coming right along.

Per writes: "The body finally has the first layer of nitro, pore fill tomorrow. Meanwhile I'm working on completing the neck and it's just about done I've been working hard on that pearl. Believe it or not the pearl around the edge of the headstock was more work than the complete torch. Some more engraving then slots."

Thanks for the work on the headstock Per , it's an original spec for Gene's guitar that I've only seen on a few other Martin models over their illustrious history.

Per has been moving right along with the first coats of nitro.

Thanks Per!

Default 45S update

Nicely polished and ready for the neck.

And, looks like the headstock is ready for tuners and the nut.

And a little more praise for the 00-42. It continues to make me smile every time I pick it up and play, so articulate, responsive and capable of just about everything but heavy strumming, and it's cool to look at as well...

Thanks Per!

Default 45S Almost done...

Per sent me some pictures of the 45 strung up and ready to play. All that's missing are the snowflakes on the bridge wings. Initial reports are that it has exceptional sound, something I expected after seeing it being built and getting to play the 00-42.

It is very cold where Per is right now, so shipping will be a while longer. Time enough to get a recording, let the finish cure and some snowflakes I hope.

Two down, one to go!

Thanks Per!

Thumbs up

Wow, that's an awesome looking guitar right there, the woods, craftmanship, everything. Normally I don't really like bling on guitars, but this one is just gorgeous! Hopefully you don't have to wait too long before you receive it...

ralphj, I'm pretty pleased with the whole thing myself! It's pretty darn cold over there, so it'll be a while before it ships. Since the OM should be done soon, I'll probably get both shipped together if possible.

Matthew, I can't remember a close up of the whole top during the build, so I wasn't really sure what it would look like, but it'll do just fine. I just told Per to select the top based on what stiffness/tap would be best for a 12 fret Dread, and he did the rest.

Recording is made, waiting on production!

Here's another pic that I didn't post of the unfinished headstock slotted.
