I have Martin Titaniums on my J45.
Last night at my lesson my instructor played it so I was able to hear them differently.
They sounded very good to me.
I may try some Masterbuilts next as that is what it came with.
That won't be for a while though. The Titaniums are only a couple of weeks old.

My J45 WM (working man) likes GHS Vintage Bronze 80/20 Medium. I like 80/20's on it, they mellow faster than PB strings.

I also have a set of 80/20 Dean Markley lights, and the Martin Monel lights that I want to try. I like the sound of older strings, and tend to leave 80/20's on for 4-6 months!

I've had the Martin Retro Monels on my J-45 Vintage for the last 5 days or so. Not a fan. Will be re-stringing with Gibson Masterbuilt in the near future. I bought the Martin Titaniums and the bridge pin would not hold the string down. I'm returning them.

I liked the Gibson 80/20s also on mine. Right now I have Martin Titaniums on it (7 months and counting).

I'm not sure what is going on it next. I have Santa Cruz low tensions, D'Addario NB bluegrass. Martin 80/20 and some PBs laying around.

Tried following strings on my J45 in the past few months:
Elixiers Nano 80/20, Santa Cruz Low Tension, EXP, Martin Retro, Lifespan, Gibson and Gibson Masterbuilt, Sunbeams.

At this point I think I like the Gibson Masterbuilt 80/20 best closely followed by EXP, Santa Cruz, and Elixiers.

Didn’t care for a Retros, Lifespan, and Sunbeams much at all.

For those who have experimented with Santa Cruz and/or SUS on their J-45, how do they sound in comparison to EJ-16's or any other PB? I prefer 80/20's on my J-45, but EJ-16's are ok as well, but I don't care much for any darker PB strings. Please be specific about which tension you used.

My J-45 is one where mediums "choke" the tone, but I am a heavy strummer, so super slinky strings won't work. I currently use D'Addario 80/20 lights, 157 tension. I am interested in seeing the effect of the balanced tension on the bridge of my very "particular" J-45, but don't want a dark PB sound.

Next they're going on my smaller Gibsonesque SC and 814. Though I don't own a J45, the CJ35 is a similar sloped jumbo Gibson-like guitar, and they sound great. I know they are not super well known, but the shop I bought the CJ, a major Collings dealer, called the Mangan strings their typical recommendation for Collings jumbos, and they are also very popular with the SCGC forumites.

Try a set, they're totally reasonable price-wise. I use their 12-54 Medium-Light PBs. Good luck.
I also like the Curt Mangans - my personal favorites. I have the Gibson J-15 - I know it is a different B&S wood than the J-45, but give the Mangan PB's a try. I prefer the Traditional Light hex core PB's.

Late to the party, but I'll play!

My fingers can reduce uncoated strings to dull-sounding crap in a day. Doesn't matter which brand. Not sure what it is that I exude, but it is toxic to uncoated strings.

I use Elixer PB's on my '49 J-50, but usually only those that have come off another guitar during a string change, one with a longer scale. Old, worn-out coated strings, with the coating worn off from picking, make that J-50 sound the way I want it to. New strings on it are just all wrong.

So, basically the strings on my J-50 are always free!

I just changed out Martin Retros on my J-45 for D'Ad EJ-16s and it sure is different! The Martins were on for almost 3 months (which is longer than usual here)and they were O.K. but I found them hard on the fingers and stiffer to bend-I guess because of higher tension. The D'Ads sound rounder and more resonant and easier on the left hand. Man, it's hard to figure out what's good, better and best with strings! I guess we hear things differently day to day and variables in the humidity, age of the strings, etc. can make one crazy trying to figure it out. I've tried a few different makes but I keep coming back to EJ-16s. I'm leery of trying medium gauge in spite of what some of you say about mediums. I guess I'm nervous about harming the integrity of the guitar. If anyone has a bit of history to pass on I'd be all ears.

Any string recommendations to get closer to the jangly Beatles/Rolling Stones kind of sound? It naturally gets in the ball park but I have John Pearse Phosphor Bronze mediums on mine and they sound a little too bold and robust for my tastes, I kind of want a thinner jangly 60s era kind of tone. Maybe some light strings will do the trick?

Try the Gibson Masterbuilt 80-20 Lights.

I currently have Santa Cruz Mid Tension strings on the J-45.
They are also my current favorite. But given that they cost $18 they
better last a long time to be a better value than EJ-16's which are
my second favorite. For me EJ-16's last about 3 months.

How to compare the sound of the two kinds of strings? The unbroken-in
sound of the SC Mid Tension is really different than the EJ-16's (kind of
chorus-y) but they seem to have settled in back in the direction of the
EJ-16's.

I can tell you what I didn't like on the J-45: Anything medium gauge,
Aluminum Bronze, Martin Retros, anything 80/20, anything coated.

OTOH, on the CEO-7 I really like Martin Retros and now SC Low Tensions.
The Retros last 6 - 7 months for me. The Low Tensions will have to last
more like 12 to be worth it value-wise.

Sorry for the ramblings...

I don't have a 45 but I noticed my mahogany guitars like PB while rosewood ones work better with 80/20...my choice would be John Pearse bluegrass but as at the moment I can't find them here I strung my SJ with Ernie Ball everlast medium light (really light in reality) and so far it works well.
