Gibson / Epiphone Electric Guitars Thread
Gibson or Epiphone electric guitars anyone? Tell us about the one(s) you currently own, have owned, or want to own.
I'll get it started. Here's a pic of my '99 Les Paul Standard Plus LTD. It was my first Gibson and I bought it with the money I made working lots of overtime. Stock Gibson '57 Classics zebra humbuckers. It's a keeper. |

Nice collection. That Howard Roberts is a rare bird for sure.

I recently purchased a 1999 SG Special in the extra rare, ebony stain. It looks black in the picture but the color is actually brown.
I removed the old 300k pots and junk caps and installed CTS 500k pots and orange drop caps. The pots were the ones offered by AllParts, and apparently had something like a 10-15% taper. I have since removed them and installed CTS Vintage Taper pots and Vitamin T caps from Mojotone. This is my first electric and my first attempt at modding anything. Oh, and where most SG Specials are more than one piece of wood...I lucked out and got a single piece body. This doesn't REALLY matter but I like the guitar just a little bit more because of it.

Back in the 1960s, when both brands were being made in Gibson's Kalamazoo, MI factory, it was no secret that Epiphones were a bargain beyond compare: same woods, same molds, same workmanship, in the case of the electrics, same pickups, too... and all for about 10-20% less than what a Gibson cost! Then Norlin took over and the first thing they did was move the Epiphone operation overseas to Asia somewhere (Epiphones have since been manufactured in Japan, Korea, Indonesia and China, successively). I can't speak to the quality of the Asian Epiphones, but I know they're not as good as they were when they were made here in the USA.

They were all fantastic guitars, but the CS-336 is still the best sounding guitar I have ever played. |

Got my Epi Les Paul, and I'm kind of on the fence about it. I play it, but not nearly as much as my other two electrics. Debating trading it towards a USA made Tele, or keep it and see how it does with my next kit amp with a pickup swap.
I swapped all the electronics in it, dropped in new pickups, and I still can't get a pleasing tone from the bridge pickup. I think I may be at the point where it would take a slew of upgraded hardware to get it any better, but I don't want to keep putting money into it that I could better use on other gear.

My 2008 Gibson LP Studio. Some guy had taken a sharpie and white out to it before I got it and drew some Incubus-like design on it. I removed it as much as I could and just left it as is. Gives it more mojo.

Now that's some serious mojo. There's a thread a while back about relicing electric guitars - your guitar would fit in well. Although you didn't start out relicing it, it's there now.

This is pre "relicing." It was obvious that the guy took a lot of time to draw this design but it just wasn't for me. I got the guitar at a killer price so I could deal with a little elbow grease to remove the artwork. |
