Fascinating to watch. The paua is gorgeous. I’m sure this will turn out to be a favorite Bob. Hope I get a chance to play it sometime.

Merry Christmas to ya!

It should be done Larry in about a month. Why not swing by and audition it?

Thanks David...Not exactly your typical utilitarian Style 18 .

The Blue Paua Nick selected for both the rosette and top purfling does have some deep iridescent blues and greens that will hopefully be further set off by the contrasting golden brown hues of the Cuban Mahogany once under finish...

Default Happy New Year!

The Honduran Mahogany neck blank has had a truss rod and end spline installed.

Nick has moved on to preparing the fretboard. The Gaboon Ebony fretboard has been slotted for the frets and is being bound with Gaboon Ebony bindings and mitered Sycamore Maple purflings.

Here is the neck getting a bow scraped into it and being fitted to establish neck angle with the guitar’s body.

Finally, the bound, purfled, Gaboon Ebony fretboard is registered to the Honduran Mahogany neck via pins. The last shot shows the fretboard being glued to the neck.

The fingerboard binding looks really good! Are you still planning to go with the abalone diamonds & squares long pattern inlays? That should really compliment the abalone on the top.

Thanks...

Yes, he is using Abalone Diamonds & Square Long Pattern (i.e. a diamond on 5th, two squares on the 7th, a diamond on the 9th, two squares on the 12th and one square on the 15th). We will also use Abalone dots in Ebony bridge pins as well to tie things visually together (rosette, top purflings, position markers and bridge pins). Yes, a bit upscale for a mahogany guitar, but isn't that what custom lutherie is all about?

That's what it's about! (And the beautiful curly Cuban Mahogany is pretty upscale...)

Interestingly, that curly Cuban Mahogany set was a standard body wood (no up charge), but the 50 year old German Spruce (complete with its oxidative aesthetic artifacts) was an upgrade...
