Default Crystal Voice (original)

OK, here we go. This is what happens when amateurs write, arrange, play, and record their own songs. This is my ode to Nanci Griffith, whose body of work stands up against many much more famous artists.

This mp3 isn't mastered, just mixed (in my untreated room), but I'll cross that bridge at some later date.

I'd love to hear from the accomplished players here what works and what doesn't about this. I notice it's pretty compressed after Soundcloud got through with it.

Well, I’m not all that accomplished, but here goes...

That was really nice, b1j. I enjoyed it. Well-crafted music and lyric, and the recording sounds very good. I bet t sounds even better through your own system. Did you have your diy panels in-place? I hope I can soon record as well as that.

Thanks, Tom. No, this is all pre-panel, tracked and mixed. It's the best acoustic tone I've managed without absorption panels: close-mic'd spaced pair SDCs in our large room. I'm eager to hear how I can improve on that with the panels in my spare bedroom.

I tend to move about a bit when playing, so in headphones you can hear the acoustic moving slightly within the stereo field. Lead vocal, mono, in my wife's closet, single take. BGVs in the bathroom shower, going for a Simon and Garfunkel Only Living Boy in New York effect.

This is fun.

With the recording quality of this song as a benchmark, I look forward to hearing your future efforts in the treated space.

Was this an original tribute or a cover of Nanci’s song? I enjoyed your vocal, nice raspy vocal with feeling. The guitar sounded very present with not much reverb, I really liked that sound, no room acoustics picked up from your guitar. I listened to your take on Hey Jude, very nice and you made it your own sound.

Hi gibbyguy. Thanks for the feedback. I’m glad you enjoyed the vocal and guitar. I’m beginning to come to terms with my voice and I’ve decided to just let it rip, aim for authenticity, and hope for the best. Thanks also for the hey Jude comment. The vocalist is a fellow I collaborated with remotely from Joe Gilder’s Home Studio Corner group.

Crystal Voice is my song. The lyrics came straight from the heart as I have immersed myself in Nanci’s work since her death in 2021. I was surprised by how strongly it hit me.

I'm sorry I missed this back in the past. I did not see your post for some reason and I am usually looking.

Anyway, I think you did a really nice job on this, both on your composition and in your execution of it. The recording is well done. The instrumentation and arrangement are well done and the parts are all in good time with each other, which is hard for many people, even longtime players.

I think this is well done!

In two words -> Very Professional. Perhaps bring up the volume of the vocal a bit but that's all.

I'm a solo player but to me this was a good mix.
