Steel strings on an Eight string nylon ukulele
Can you put low tension steel strings on an eight string ukulele and create a tiple? Or will it break the neck anyway even though they’re low tension steel strings?
And, can anyone send me to a site that explains the difference in tension in numbers between nylon strings and low tension steel strings and regular steel strings. Last edited by Duh; 05-11-2021 at 01:24 PM. |

More likely rip the bridge off the top.

There are usually 1 or 2 steelwound strings on a 8-string uke.
This gives it a distinct octave from a nylon. Quite similar to a baritone uke with EADG tuning. |

Does tiple not have 10 strings? And no a regular uke will not be able to handle steel string tension.

Steel strings on an Eight string nylon ukulele
If you mean to put 8 steel strings on an unmodified ukulele, it will kill it. They do make 8 string nylon too. I have a 5 string Ukulele with both a re-entrant treble string and a bass G string in a course pair like a 12 string. The bass G is a light wound string. The others are nylon. Tuned 'gG, C, E, A'. Wouldn't want to put any more tension on a neck like that. Don .

Silly idea; I know. Kind of like when the guy wanted a beer milkshake in Cannery Row.
