Yup, we spit on our guitars and wear our socks on our arms.

People seem to be talking about cleaning.

The thread topic, as I understand it, is the shiny wear spots you get on satin-sheen traditional nitro finish guitars. Nothing to do with cleanliness, it's simply polishing the satin surface to a gloss with your arm (with or without shirts and socks!) or your fingers if you rest near the pickguard.

I have used a JP arm rest, and they work great only if you keep them on for life. I removed 2 and both marred the finish albeit slightly, but it was there if you looked for it. I also find them quite ugly, but they definitely improved the tone and kept the arm off the top. I own a guitar sleeve but find it uncomfortable.

It’s funny how I never worry about it with my very high dollar vintage guitars, but only the newer ones. What one needs to do is gently drop a guitar a few times so the mojo process starts. Many manufacturers are now making “aged” versions, so it’s a bit silly to worry that much. Many of us here trade guitars back n forth so it does preserve the value, but if it’s a keeper, play it in good health and let the mojo happen.

Well, it pretty much has been a thing for the last 3 years or so.

Martin has their streetmaster series, and several vintage-inspired companies offer "distressed" finishes of differing levels.

I'm looking forward to the Martin N-20 Willie Nelson Relic model. I wonder if Jon Gomm would still let Lowden do a Jon Gomm Relic model, now that he has his Ibanez signature model

I wear a long sleeve t-shirt or I’ve cut the toe end off a white cotton sock and put that on my arm when I play.

I'm surprised at the many methods chosen for the task, when a simple wipe of a cotton cloth, kept in the case, is all that needs to be done.

Another AGF member suggested these arm sleeves from Amazon, which I've been using for a while. They work great and plenty of length for my arms.

Hence the reason for the thread lol. All kidding aside, I was curious just to see how many "I just play my guitar and don't worry about it" responses I got. I don't just sit down and play for an hour a day. I might grab it and play up to 5-6 times per day, maybe even for as short as 5 minutes a grab. Sometimes that is what you get with kiddos. But, I will say that I have corrosive arms I guess. It can be a struggle to wipe the gunk off the guitar after just an hour or two of playing.

To each their own, as is everything in this world. Thanks to all for their thoughts.
