Default That pre war sound

Leo Posch is well know for getting that Pre-war Martin sound. I have a D12 that excels and each one is customized for the buyer. Plus his prices are very reasonable.

My top two votes are consistent with names that have been mentioned:

1) John Slobod (Circa Guitars)
2) Blazer & Henkes (European builders that nail the vintage sound)

There's more, but those are the ones that resonate with me!!!

You will be VERY much impressed, and Willi and Rudy and really wonderful folks. Their guitars are really superb as well.

But...if you are after really vintage Martin tone...as in 30's Martin...I think that Bagnasco & Casati actually get closer and more accurate to it. Blazer & Henkes can do it if you want, but they don't completely emulate the vintage Martin tone as a rule, they have their own tone based off of vintage Martin.

On the UMGF, the "It" or "Hot" 3 vintage Martin repro makers are Bagnasco & Casati, Preston Thompson, and Pre War Guitar Co. though I think Blazer & Henkes can be right there with them.

I’ve heard this before and twice on this thread. My question is does he even build guitars these days and how many of his guitars are on the planet? It appears from my research that he sticks pretty much strictly to restoration of pre war guitars?

I really love that kind of punchy, twangy sound that Pre-War guitar company succeeds with on their 000-18 model. What other luthiers/companies get that sound were the string sound is quite dominant? The response is almost snappy

The OM/PW is available from Santa Cruz in short scale (24.75) if you want to order it and wait for it. I have the regular Santa Cruz OM in that scale.

I’ve already owned a Santa Cruz and tried several. It’s not quite the sound I’m after

You are correct RW...TJ mostly does vintage repair/restoration. He does build a few...very few...guitars every year, but I am guessing his total output of guitars is likely in the range of less than 200 total...and could even be less than that.

You can tell that they are ultra rare, and desirable, as you almost never ever see one come up for sale. They move, like ultra high end fine art pieces and Strad and Guarneri violins...and best of the best vintage 30's Martins, very quietly on the "underground" uber high end collector market.

TJ builds as close to vintage Martin as you can get, and they look wonderful, and his work is stellar...but...do they sound better than any of the other high end vintage Martin repro luthiers mentioned thus far in this thread?

To my ear...no, no they don't. As good, yes, better?, that just depends on the given guitar in comparison.

But TJ is enthralling to talk with and listen to speak on the subject of guitars, and he is rocket scientist smart! He is a delightful and insightful person to get to hand around.

I like Collings I have owned one, but, they sound a bit too cold for my taste. Very clean and excellent separation

From experience, I would add John Greven.

From recommendations, I would add Kim Walker and Chris Bozung.

I just bought an Atkin essential 000.
Basically a 000-18 with baked top and braces, pre war bracing specs and a lightly aged finish.

Its a wonderful guitar, very lightly built.
Made in england but they are available in the US.

worth checking them out if you can.
