The Tele bridge was the pickup Leo originally used in lap steel guitars and it became the one we now see in Teles. The magnets in Tele bridge pickups come in three flavors magnet-wise, A2, A3 or A5's. Depending on the number of windings can go from thin and very old-school twangy to dang near P90 status. The types of wire also vary in diameter. My Tele has a custom over-wound pickups with heavier gauge wire. The bridge has 1/4" diameter magnets instead of the standard 3/16's and it growls like nobody's business with the modern country twang you hear today. It is a very hot pickup. The neck pup has the extended-length magnets like the ones used in Strats and gives you a very Strat-like sound similar to what the 70's Blues guys used. The American Standard Tele generally comes with A5 Alnicos but Fender used A3's in certain years. For my money, the Mexican or "Standard Telecaster" is the best value out there and you can do a few awesome upgrades like pickups, bridge and tuners and have a "monster" Tele for well under the price of an American. You can do the same with a Mexican Strat. A few years ago I spent wa-a-y too much time learning all this and way too much money swapping out pickups but I got me one mean Tele machine out of all of it. My grandson has my hot-rodded Mexi-Strat that has the hottest single coil bridge pup in it you can buy. That one sounds as near to a Tele bridge as you can get.

Lol! Bajas are great. He has a good sense of quality. That’s encouraging. Maybe not for your checkbook though.

The Baja would be my choice as an "out of the box" Tele.
Good luck.

Here's another problem: he doesn't like the clunky neck of his les Paul studio. He likes his strat neck very much. The Baja has a thicker beefier neck, or so it looks. Might be back to Tele Pro....

Telecaster advice
Quote:
The Baja is chunky - many traditionalists and others prefer the chunky neck. I don’t. As I stated above (I think) I have a similar preference for the more modern style neck of my Strat and my Classic (MiM) 60s Tele, which feel quite similar to each other (I played a friend’s genuine 60s Tele a couple of years ago and the reissue comes very close in terms of neck and fingerboard profile). Aside from the extra switching options (and lower price?) on the Baja models I think he is going to like the Professional a lot! I haven’t checked recently but if they are still doing a model with ash body, maple neck and 2-tone sunburst (like the pic of the discontinued Standard that you posted earlier) that would be so cool: that was such a great wood and colour combination I was considering one for a long time (until I bought my equally gorgeous G&L).
