NOSGD
New/old SG day. I actually bought this used from GC abut 5 years ago and it was a mess, having a lot of undisclosed defects due to ill-advised tweaks by some ham-handed yokel. If I had been thinking straight, I probably should have sent it back right away, but I decided I could properly rehab this thing...problem was, I didn't get around to it until I just couldn't stand it any longer and wanted to sell it.
The finish was badly scratched, and I don't mean honest playing wear; someone had actually tried to simulate playing wear by scuffing the finish on the lower bout...but they used what appeared to be about 100 grit sandpaper to do it. I think "relic"-ing is silly to start with, but this was beyond the pale. It was also, overall banged up from mis-handling, finish fogged from being 'rode hard & put away wet". One of my other objections to the guitar was that, having the 'chunky' style neck, it was neck heavy & unbalanced, so I decided what it needed is a nice Bigsby to put a little weight on the back end. I could go on with the various problems & defects that I corrected on this guitar, but the upshot is this...now that i have it all squared away, I can't bear to sell it. It has all the attributes that one looks for in a mid-sixties-style SG-with-P90s...lots of snarl, great access above the 12th. It's a keeper...who knew?

At least you didn't have to repair the headstock. I've always wanted one of those red SGs from the '60s, yours looks great!

They patterned the neck after the modification Gibson made back in the '60s to address the fragile headstock...made it beefier...and this one has the 'long tenon' neck attachment. I recommend that Bigsby on these, whether you use a trem or not...it stays in tune well and puts just enough weight on the back end to balance it nicely. It also improved the overall tone of this guitar...improved it a LOT! Incidentally, the Bigsby was installed with a V5 Plate-mate, which attaches to the tailpiece bushings, requiring no extra holes in the guitar, although I did have to cut a little slot in the "bat-wing" pick guard to accommodate it.

I must admit that I'm not a fan of the SG look nowadays - but that Ibanez AR in the rack looks yummy...

Awesome! Just looking at that beauty makes my ears ring.
What is that I hear in the distance? Oh, it's 'Black Napkins'!

Carlos Santana says that his near-identical SG started to turn into a writhing cobra while playing it at Woodstock! Better living through chemistry, eh Carlos?
