Then again, my wife has never really put up much of a fuss when I have something in the cross hairs. Of course, to balance that, I wouldn't even think about it if the funding wasn't there.. so there is that.

But that said, a direct approach is probably best... "I've been thinking about this...." and let the chips fall where they may.
Oh yeah, I start talking about it for a few days ahead of time.
I might need to start talking about a Tom Anderson Baritone strat for the next week or so...

If you have an instrument or two that you don’t play very often and are willing to sacrifice, then that might help in your negotiations. Guitar amplifiers also can fit in this equation.

You are all missing an important path to a desired guitar--in-laws. Excuse me for bragging, but my mother-in-law bought me my first carbon fiber--because I was so good to her daughter (most of the time). And then there are extended family hits for everyone to gather together their resources to buy so-and-so the guitar of his or her dreams. I understand that go-Fund-Me can sometimes work.

Happy Wife, Happy Life. If times are tight, wait. Buy the guitar when appropriate and have no regrets.

I work on the GIGO principle (guitar in, guitar out). Spouse is happy with that...

I thought of that....but they’ve been with me a while and we’ve been through so much together.

My wife is fantastic about my purchases. At this point, she’d like a few of them gone, though. I really don’t play them all and can easily get rid of a few. I’m too lazy to write up the ads, and will be disappointed in the sale dollars. On the flip side, I’d be able to buy an Emerald because it’s more about the room than the cash. As far as asking, I’m fortunate in that I don’t. We both do work and the finances are ok, so she hasn’t cared much. Like I said, it’s now about the room they take up.

Default I want to thank you all

I was going to thank you all personally but my iPad times out. You inspired me to find the right time, beg, plead, bargain and grovel. Just enough but back off enough to preserve some dignity...”so my watch begins....again.”

To beg, plead, bargain, grovel and still have any dignity is quite an accomplishment. At least you're not lying, sneaking, and cheating to get what you want. May your wait be short.
