I don't understand the obsession with wider nuts on this forum - IME it just makes it harder to play seated, especially in classical position...

It's amazing the difference 1/16" makes in playability.

Until I picked up a guitar with a 1 3/4" nut width, I didn't think that small of a difference could possibly be noticeable. Boy was I wrong!

I love the additional width and honestly, that's part of the reason when I bought my OM-1 it got so much more playing time than my old Taylor 114 and eventually wound up parting ways with the latter. The wider nut does wonders for articulation and such.

I'm not sure as though I'd like a 1 7/8" nut as I have smallish hands, but nut size is just part of making the guitar "fit" you I think (just as with action, string gauge, body size, etc.). If you're fine with a 1 11/16" nut then by all means stick with it. Otherwise don't be afraid to play guitars with other nut widths. You might be surprised!

The 1/16 doesn't seem like much, but it is usually combined with a wider bridge spacing that might be 2 3/8 instead of 2 1/8, or 1/4" wider. Add the two together and it makes a big difference. I prefer 1 3/4 an 2 3/8 with my big fingers.

It's taken me years to come to the conclusion that my personal comfort zone is between 1 11/16 and 1 3/4, but that I can't really predict which neck will feel right to me just by nut width. Neck depth, contour, radius, frets and string spacing each contribute a lot to overall comfort. Regardless of the nut width, narrow string-spacing will make my fingerstyle playing tough. But so will a neck contour that is too shallow and a radius too flat/large. Regarding nut widths, so long as the fret ends will allow for string-spacing adjustments, I'm cool.

I used to prefer the 1 11/16s neck and, until 2002, that's what most of my guitars had. After that I started getting 1 3/4 necks because that's what the guitars I wanted had. I got used to them. The only thinner neck I play today are on my GS Mini-M and my sons all-solid 210. These days I don't find it any trouble to go between the two.
