Deering is about as good as it gets...

I have one made by Al McCanless that I'm happy with. He just builds them as the mood strikes him, it seems, but I imagine he takes orders if people are interested. He's an interesting guy, plays multiple instruments, was on the first Red Clay Ramblers album as a guest artist, has a pharmacy degree, and is a talented potter.

My guitar banjo has a large pot (13", I believe), a neck shape copied from a Martin D45 but with a Gibson-style "slipper" headstock shape, lots of wood marquetry on the pot, and a giraffe-bone tailpiece with an ebony backing for strength. It can be set up for either nylon or steel strings. Nice guitar banjo.
